America doesn’t have exclusive rights to medical excellence.
One of the biggest things I hear when I talk about traveling abroad for medical care is: “But how do you know the doctor is good?”
That’s a completely fair question, but it’s a question we should be asking everywhere, including at home.
Bad surgeons exist in Mexico. They exist in Turkey. They exist in Colombia, and they exist in the United States.
I recently came across an article (linked below) for a plastic surgeon in Houston who has been named in four malpractice lawsuits. Being treated in America doesn’t automatically mean you’re getting excellent care, just as traveling to another country doesn’t automatically mean you’re taking a dangerous risk.
Geography is not a credential.
The real question is: Who is your surgeon?
What are their credentials? How much experience do they have with your specific procedure? Where will the surgery be performed? What are their complication rates? What happens if something goes wrong, and what does your aftercare look like?
Medical excellence has no borders, and neither does medical risk. Always, do your homework.
