Teaching CA students has made me realise something I never understood as a student.
Knowing a subject and teaching a subject are two completely different things. When you are studying, you are mostly concerned with one question: “Do I understand this?” But when you are teaching, the question changes. “How do I make them understand this?”
Sometimes the concept is technically simple. But explaining it in a way that makes sense to someone who is seeing it for the first time is not always simple.
There have been classes where I have prepared everything beforehand. The concepts were clear. The examples were ready. The flow was planned.
And then one student asks a question that I hadn't anticipated. Sometimes that one question changes the entire direction of the class. And honestly, I like those moments.
Because they remind me that teaching isn't a performance where the faculty speaks and the students listen. It is a process of understanding each other.
My CA and CS journey taught me the importance of knowing the subject. My experience as a faculty is teaching me something equally important: Knowing the answer is valuable. Knowing how to help someone find the answer is a different skill altogether.
And I think I am still learning that skill every day.
