I built an AI chatbot on Android that works with NO internet. 🤯

No servers. No API keys. No per-message cost. Just a language model running entirely on the phone I put it in airplane mode and it still answered.

Here's what went into it 👇

🔹 Google's Gemma 3 (1B, int4 quantized) running on-device
🔹 LiteRT-LM (the successor to TensorFlow Lite for LLMs)
🔹 100% Kotlin + Jetpack Compose
🔹 Token-by-token streaming responses
🔹 Live Markdown rendering in the chat

The part that surprised me most: on-device AI has quietly become genuinely practical. A quantized model fits comfortably on a modern phone, and the payoff is huge — privacy (your data never leaves the device), zero cost, and it works with no connection at all.

A few things I learned the hard way while building it:
→ The model can't load from assets directly — you copy it to internal storage first, then point the engine at that path.
→ Re-parsing Markdown on every streamed token causes brutal flickering. The fix was retaining the last rendered state while the next chunk parses.
→ Auto-scroll needs to follow the growing message, but stop fighting the user the moment they scroll up.

On-device AI is where a lot of mobile is heading, and it's a great time for Android devs to start experimenting.
