Paul Williams was the heartbeat and undisputed visionary behind The Temptations. Long before the world fell in love with their signature style, Paul was crafting the legendary choreography and magnetic stage presence that set the standard for generations of performers. He possessed an incredible love for his fans and for humanity, pouring every single ounce of raw emotion, heart, and soul into every stage he graced.
And that voice? Absolutely unmatched. Paul’s baritone was a masterful instrument, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the absolute greatest voices in history, right alongside timeless icons like Nat King Cole. Warm, rich, and deeply resonant, his vocals were the foundational soul of the Motown sound.
They broke the mold when they made Paul Williams. There will never, ever be another like him, but today we turn our grief into gratitude for the incredible gift he gave the world. Rest in harmony, Paul, your light and music will shine forever.
Happy Sunday! Today I'm sharing a picture of The Primes, which is the group Paul and Eddie were in before The Temptations! I wanted to share a little story about The Primes, courtesy of Paul's younger brother Marvin. This was about a routine Paul had put together.
"...they used to do a rouine; this was way before they got famous, they was here in Birmingham, still in high school. So they did this song, what's the name of it? “Get a Job. Get a Job.” So one night—and I remember this, 'cause I was a kid and I remember how upset my brother was that Eddie and Kell got to fighing on stage. And so, they had did this rouine where “get a job, get a job,” and in some kind of way, this routine where Eddie and Kell get in like a little tussle. It wasn't supposed to be real—you know. But Eddie took it to the next stage and it wound up being a real tussle on stage. And I was a kid, man. Shoot, I couldn't have been no more in about seven or eight, but I remember that."
Eddie wasn't really welcoming to the thiught of Kell joining when they first met because he felt he was a threat to his friendship with Paul. Marvin also shared, "When Kell met my brother and Eddie—see Kell could read music and play piano and my brother Paul and Eddie couldn't—now, but when he met Kell, Kell introduced him into reading music and chord changes. And so that enhanced what my brother was looking for. But it was hard for Eddie to accept because see, Eddie and my brother was like that [very close] growing up. And then when Kell came in the picture I don't think Eddie could see it like that [enhancing the group]."
Eventually Eddie and Kell made peace and the trio left Birmingham for Cleveland where other fates happened. We'll get into that another time! And what became of Kell? I had a whole story on him on my original page that was taken down, so we'll revisit it agin here! Stay tuned!

During the Motown Motortown Revue, The Temptations took the stage at one of the most legendary venues in music. By this point, the group was riding the success of "My Girl", but every performance still had to be earned in front of an Apollo audience known for expecting nothing but the best.
With Paul Williams' unforgettable choreography, Eddie Kendricks' sharp eye for style, David Ruffin's rising star power, Melvin Franklin's unmistakable bass, and Otis Williams holding it all together, The Temptations proved exactly why they were becoming one of Motown's premier acts.

It's always fun to see them just enjoying life and having fun together! They were all family and it shows!
Today we're celebrating the life and heavenly birthday of the heart and soul of The Temptations; the man who gave them their moves, the vision and the emotions... Mr. Paul Williams!
What can I say about this man that I haven't said before? When I think of everything he accomplished on his short time on Earth, it makes me so inspired to do better in my own!
When The Temptations formed, he brought a sense of leadership, soul and vision to the group that was an important ingredient for their success. And to think of The Temptations, you think of not just their music, but their movement. Their choreography is known around the world and that started with Paul!
Beyond being a member of The Tempts, he was a very kind, warm, humble and giving person. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. A meal if you were hungry, a dollar if you needed it and a hug! He cared so deeply about people that nobody ever said one bad thing about this man. He didn't care who you were, the color of your skin or where you were. In his eyes, everyone deserved kindness.
So today, on his birthday, we celebrate him for everything he was and what his legacy continues to be.

Today we're celebrating the life and heavenly birthday of the heart and soul of The Temptations; the man who gave them their moves, the vision and the emotions... Mr. Paul Williams!
What can I say about this man that I haven't said before? When I think of everything he accomplished on his short time on Earth, it makes me so inspired to do better in my own!
