What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but serious virus that can cause severe illness in humans. It is usually carried by rodents, such as mice and rats. People can become infected when they come into contact with dust, urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting materials contaminated by infected rodents.
According to the CDC, there is currently no specific cure for hantavirus infection, so early recognition and prompt medical care are extremely important.
How Does Hantavirus Spread?
The risk is higher when cleaning closed, dusty, or rarely used areas such as sheds, garages, basements, barns, cabins, storage rooms, or places where rodents may have been living.
When rodent urine or droppings dry out, contaminated particles can mix with dust and become airborne. If a person breathes in that contaminated dust, they may become infected. In some cases, infection may also happen after touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Early Warning Signs to Watch For
In the early stage, hantavirus can feel very similar to the flu, which makes it easy to ignore. Symptoms may include:
Fever, headache, muscle aches, extreme tiredness, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, chills, dizziness, or diarrhea.
Because these symptoms can seem common at first, many people may not realize they are connected to rodent exposure.
Danger Signs That Need Urgent Care
The biggest concern is that hantavirus can progress quickly, especially when it affects the lungs. Seek emergency medical care right away if symptoms appear after possible rodent exposure and you develop:
Coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, trouble breathing, severe weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, or signs of shock.
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome can become life-threatening and may require urgent hospital care, including breathing support.
How Is It Treated?
There is no specific cure for hantavirus. Treatment usually focuses on supportive care, such as monitoring breathing, managing symptoms, giving fluids, and providing intensive care if the illness becomes severe.
The most important thing is to get medical help early if you develop flu-like symptoms after cleaning or spending time in an area where rodents, droppings, urine, or nesting materials may have been present.
How to Help Prevent Hantavirus
The best protection is to reduce contact with rodents and contaminated areas.
Keep homes, garages, storage rooms, and workplaces clean. Seal holes where rodents can enter. Store food in sealed containers. Do not dry sweep or vacuum rodent droppings, because this can stir contaminated dust into the air.
Before cleaning an area that may have rodent contamination, dampen it first, wear gloves if possible, clean carefully, and wash your hands well afterward.
Important Reminder
If you develop flu-like symptoms after cleaning a shed, garage, basement, barn, cabin, or any area with signs of rodents — especially if you begin to have trouble breathing — seek medical care immediately.
Early medical attention can make a serious difference.
