NIP-05 and BIP-353 both give you a (name@example.com) identifier, and both inherit DNS. A NIP-05 identifier resolves by fetching a JSON file from a web server. A BIP-353 address resolves to a DNSSEC-signed TXT record.

The proofs in BIP-353 are real cryptography, but DNS is a tower of custody. The record is signed by the zone operator, whose key is vouched for by the registry, whose key is vouched for by ICANN. Each link in that chain can rewrite what sits below it, and the name itself is rented.

A spaces handle inverts that. The binding between the name and your key is committed to Bitcoin and proven by a certificate you hold. The operator that issued it has no way to alter it, and nothing has to be renewed.
