Mashelem it is Finished

The Two Sisters Who Faced Torture and Death Rather Than Deny Christ

They were sisters.

They were arrested because they were Catholic.

They were imprisoned, tortured, and humiliated.

But when they were given the chance to save their lives by abandoning Christ, they refused.

Their names were St. Columba Kim Hyo-im and St. Agnes Kim Hyo-ju, two Korean martyrs of the persecution of 1839.

Columba was born in 1814, and Agnes two years later, in 1816, in Bamseom, near the Han River.

Their family was originally not Catholic. Their mother gradually became interested in the Catholic faith, while their father strongly
opposed it.

After their father died, their mother embraced Catholicism and raised her six children in the faith.

Columba and Agnes, together with their younger sister Clara, decided to dedicate themselves completely to God as virgins.

They rejected the expectations of marriage and instead devoted themselves to prayer and service.

They prayed the Rosary.

They fasted twice a week.

They read Catholic books.

They gave alms to the poor.

Although their family was wealthy, they showed little interest in material possessions.

People who knew them admired their gentleness, charity, and deep faith.

Then, in 1839, persecution against Catholics intensified.

On May 3, authorities arrived at the home of their brother Anthony, searching for Catholics.

Agnes was captured inside the house.

Columba managed to hide briefly in a neighboring home, but she was eventually discovered and arrested as well.

When she saw the soldiers treating her younger sister roughly, Columba courageously protested.

The two sisters were taken to Seoul and interrogated.

The authorities demanded that they abandon Catholicism and reveal the whereabouts of other believers.

Their answer was unwavering:

They would not deny God.

Even the threat of death could not make them betray their faith.

Then came torture.

They were beaten repeatedly and subjected to cruel punishments intended to force them to renounce Christianity.

Yet the sisters remained remarkably calm, praying silently and refusing to surrender their faith in Christ.

According to historical accounts, Columba and Agnes were stripped naked, beaten, and thrown into a prison cell with hardened male prisoners, where they endured terrible abuse and humiliation.

When they were finally brought before the judge and sentenced to death, Columba courageously spoke against the injustice they had suffered.

She declared:

"Whether she is the daughter of a noble or a commoner, the chastity of a young woman has the right to be respected. If you wish to kill me according to the law of the country, I will willingly accept the punishment. But it is not right that I should suffer insults that are not part of the law."

Her fearless words astonished the court.

The judge was so moved that he ordered those responsible for the abuse to be punished.

But he did not spare the sisters.

Because they refused to abandon Christ, Columba and Agnes were sentenced to death.

On September 3, 1839, Agnes was beheaded outside the Small West Gate of Seoul.

She was only 24 years old.

Twenty-three days later, on September 26, Columba was beheaded at the same place.

She was 26.

Two sisters.

Two young women.

One faith.

One unwavering love for Christ.

Their sacrifice became part of the witness of the early Korean Catholic Church, a Church whose faith was embraced and spread remarkably through the efforts of Korean laypeople.

On May 6, 1984, during his historic visit to Korea, Pope St. John Paul II canonized Columba, Agnes, and the other Korean martyrs in Seoul.

Their story reminds us that holiness does not depend on wealth, social status, or worldly power.

These two sisters possessed something they considered far more precious:

faithfulness to Jesus Christ.

They could have saved themselves by giving up their faith.

They refused.

And today, the Church remembers their names—not because they were powerful in the eyes of the world, but because they remained faithful when faith demanded everything.

🙏 Saint Columba Kim Hyo-im and Saint Agnes Kim Hyo-ju, courageous sisters and martyrs of Korea, pray for us!

✝️ May we have the same courage to remain faithful to Christ, even when our faith is tested.
