Russia is racing to build its own version of Starlink after losing access to Elon Musk’s satellite network in Ukraine.
But its new Rassvet constellation is already running into problems, both in orbit and on the ground. For now, its few satellites allow for only short, intermittent windows of potential coverage. Of 16 Rassvet-3 satellites launched in March, one has already burned up in the atmosphere. None reached their originally planned 800-kilometer orbit.
Another 16 launched in July — and three have since fallen to 300 kilometers or lower and may not become operational.
