“No AI companies. No crypto. No work chat on my phone.”
When Jake Wharton was looking for his next role, he shared nine personal values, with one caveat: “You don't need to share them all, but more is better.”
Here’s his list:
1. No “AI.” No AI companies, AI-based products, or forced AI usage for development.
2. No crypto. Cryptography is good. Cryptocurrencies are bad.
3. Remote work. Working remotely, with a couple of office visits each year.
4. Open source. The company uses open source software and publishes its own projects, or wants to start.
5. Customers over shareholders. The product focuses on providing value to customers, not enriching shareholders.
6. People over profits. No gig workers or exploitative practices to squeeze every cent from customers.
7. Small and focused. Doing one thing well is better than trying to be everything to everyone.
8. Diversity, equity, and inclusion. Distributing opportunity equally takes active work.
9. Work/life balance. No work chat, email, or code review on his phone.
In our conversation with Jake, we went through every value: where it came from and how it shaped his job search. And, of course, we asked: did he have to compromise on any of them when he accepted an offer?
We also talked about Kotlin, Google, and the future of software development with AI.

AI is changing not only how developers write code, but also what’s worth learning in the first place.
We spoke with Ardit Sulce, a Python educator who has taught more than 650,000 students, about which parts of programming are still worth learning the hard way, what can be handed over to AI, and which skills become more valuable as generating code gets easier.
