“When I look at this rubble, I remember my children.”

You can’t escape the sound of drones over Alaa Hessi’s tent pitched on the ruins of her house. From the tent she can see the yellow line, a demarcation boundary agreed with the Israelis after the October 2025 ceasefire. Her home was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike that killed all three of her children.

While pregnant with her fourth child, Alaa describes walking in 34C heat through bombed streets filled with rubble and insects to her prenatal care appointments — and her hope that her new baby will live a better life than the ones his siblings experienced.

A new report has put a spotlight on the rapid expansion of private jet travel in the US, revealing that they are up to 14 times more polluting than commercial flights.⁠

The report from the Institute for Policy Studies also shows that despite the average private jet owner's wealth being $190m, they are not paying their fair share of aviation tax.⁠

The number of private jet flights has surged in recent years, with climate-heating emissions linked to that mode of travel rising by 50%, according to the most comprehensive global analysis to date.⁠

At the same time, private jets and charter services now account for roughly 16% of flight operations handled by the Federal Aviation Administration, according to the institute’s report.⁠

“The rest of us should not have to pay for the luxury excess of the private jet billionaire class,” report co-author Chuck Collins said in a statement. “Our hard-earned tax dollars shouldn’t subsidize their reckless air travel habits that further harm our warming planet.”⁠

In the event of a midterms election battering, it is possible that a deflated Donald Trump, constrained by a Democrat-controlled Congress, will gradually have to face up to the indignity of irrelevance.

Yet somehow this scenario does not seem to fit the Trump personality, the US media landscape or indeed the recent history of other presidential endings. Labour has been warned its “skills revolution” to tackle youth unemployment risks failure, after its flagship apprenticeship scheme enrolled only 160 young people in its first eight months.

The shortfall, highlighted in a report by the Fabian Society, leaves the government well off track of achieving its ambition of 30,000 “foundation apprenticeship” starts by the end of this parliament.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson said: “We are determined to increase apprenticeship starts among young people and give them the skills they need to succeed.

“We are already pivoting the system towards the next generation, including creating 50,000 additional apprenticeships for young people, and introducing a new incentive of up to £2,000 for SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises] which take on a 16- to 24-year-old apprentice."
