IN THEIR OWN WORDS is a documentary channel that uncovers the real, unfiltered story of pop's ultimate group, ABBA.
Through rare audio, video, pictures and archival interviews, we explore the personal and profesional lives of Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid, the input from insiders in their tight circle, and how it all came together for a little band from Sweden to evolve into one of the most enduring musical phenomenons the world has ever known.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS
It's time to spotlight *THAT* ABBA anthem. The one that gets us in our feelings. The one that make our eyes water, and sing from the rafters.
For the last 46 years, it has become somewhat of a pop standard, covered by a string of vocalists and in different musical styles. But the original still remains an iconic moment in music history.
In our next video, we look back at the song's painful history, the divorce that inspired it, the way the lyrics literally oozed out of its writer, and a vocal delivery that has sent shivers down our spine.

As unproblematic as they seemed to be, ABBA did manage to ruffle some feathers.
That’s what happened in the Soviet Union during the first half of the 1980s, after Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus agreed to represent the group in “Let Poland Be Poland,” a US-government sponsored television special aired in early 1982, and meant to be a show of solidarity with the Polish people.
Their message, however, was pulled from the official broadcast at the last minute. New York Times writer John Burns said that the reason ABBA’s segment was not used was because Benny and Björn expressed sympathies for the victims of repression in countries like Chile, El Salvador, Afghanistan and Iran “where people are not able to express themselves openly and freely like we’re doing now.”
Once the most popular Western musical ensemble in the USSR, ABBA fell into official disfavor as a result of Benny and Björn’s involvement with the “Let Poland Be Poland” special, and it was later reported that “ABBA - The Movie” was pulled from Soviet theaters.

You might look at these guys and say “That’s not ABBA,” and you’d be right!
They are the Hoola Bandoola Band, quite possibly the most recognizable group of the so-called Progg movement in Sweden…and they couldn’t be more opposite to Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida.
While Benny and Björn talked about the complexities of human relationships in their songs, the Hoola Bandoola took their cues from leftist beliefs and social commentary.
It’s been well documented how they virtually despised everything ABBA stood for. On the 2013 BBC documentary, “The Joy of ABBA,” Hoola Bandoola member Mikael Wiehe said “We were the upset generation. We were upset about the apartheid system, the dictatorships in Europe, the military coups in Latin America, the wars in Southeast Asia…and we were upset that ABBA weren’t upset.”
Our next video, quite possibly our most controversial, hopes to rectify that thought, as the ABBA members have now used their platform to share their thoughts (and even take action) on some of our world’s most pressing issues.

Happy ARRIVAL day! 🚁
On this day, 50 years ago, the world witnessed the launch of ABBA’s fourth studio album, the one that transformed them from Eurovision winners to international superstars.
The LP includes theee of their biggest hits ever: “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” and “Knowing Me, Knowing You.” Not to mention plenty of fan favorites like “When I Kissed The Teacher,” “That’s Me,” “My Love, My Life” and “Why Did It Have To Be Me.”
“Arrival” became one of the best selling albums of the 1970s, and currently preserved in the US National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance.
What’s your favorite memory of this iconic album?
