1️⃣ 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞

Don’t send the same resume everywhere.

Make sure your resume speaks the language of Product Management and includes the keywords Google is looking for.

And yes, you can learn to speak technical language even if you don’t know how to code.

Pick any Google product — not just the popular ones — and spend 5 minutes practicing per product.

I've been a Director of Product at Fortune 500 companies, so let me describe SEPTEMBER HIRING SEASON from the other side of the table.

A senior PM role opens.

Hundreds of resumes come in.

And many of them say the same things:

• “Led cross-functional teams of 20+”
• “Defined product strategy and roadmap”
• “Drove 30% YoY growth”

All true.

But also… interchangeable.

At the senior level, your resume tells hiring managers 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐢𝐝.

Your 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕 𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝑯𝑶𝑾 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌.

I saw this firsthand with Davica.

Here’s my 17-year journey to U.S. citizenship:

In 2009, I came to the U.S. with just $𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 to pursue my PhD.

At 24, I became one of the youngest engineering PhDs at Boston University.

But having a PhD didn’t mean I knew how to build a career.

I had no job. No money. And honestly, I felt pretty lost.

So I spent the next four months upskilling myself, and eventually landed a Systems Engineer role at Shell.

Then came the green card journey.

My first company slowed down my green card process, so I eventually moved to Verizon. Verizon expedited the process, and I was able to apply for an EB-1B.

But then immigration policies changed, and even my EB-1 process was delayed for years.

Finally, in September 2020 — 𝟏𝟏 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. — 𝐈 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝.

And then came another waiting period.

I decided to get my citizenship on my own rather than through marriage. That was a personal choice that mattered to me. I wanted to know that I could build this life and achieve it independently.

Last week, after years of waiting, I finally took the citizenship oath.

𝟏𝟕 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒., 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐈 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝟒 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐨𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠.

It was the beginning of the pandemic.

Companies were freezing hiring.

My background was in oil & gas, and I was already a Group Product Manager at Horizon.

But I wanted to make one big career move:

𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞.

So instead of applying to hundreds of jobs, I did something completely different.

I bet $500 with my husband at the time:

“If I don’t get a job offer within 60 days, you keep the money.”

That gave me one thing I needed: 𝒖𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚.

Within ONE day, I:

→ Updated my LinkedIn and resume
→ Reached out to recruiters I knew
→ Contacted hiring managers
→ Activated my entire professional network

And here’s the crazy part:

𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛.

Instead, I networked.

That led to about 𝟭𝟬 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀.

Then something interesting happened.

A recruiter I had known for years told me about one leadership position.

Then he said:

“We actually have four positions. Do you want to apply to all of them?”

I said, “Absolutely.”

Eventually, I made it to multiple final-round interviews and received 𝟒 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐬—𝟑 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬.

The biggest lesson?

𝐀 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫-𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝.

Companies may not want competitors to know they’re building a new AI product, changing their strategy, or hiring a senior leader.

So those opportunities often move through 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕.

And here's another lesson:

Even when “nobody is hiring,” companies will still pay for exceptional talent.

If you can demonstrate that you’re a top candidate who can create significant business impact, companies will find the budget.

So if you're a Senior PM aiming for a Director-level role:

…and started 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

That’s exactly what happened to Judy Xiong.

She went from Deloitte consultant → Product Manager → top-performing product leader at TD Bank.
