There wasn't one particular portfolio piece that got me hired.
It was my general skill level, and storyboard examples that showed I had the potential to do the work. The presentation was in the proper format, and I showed a positive attitude and a willingness to do what was needed.
There was a lot to fix in those early portfolios. But they showed enough potential that I got hired as a contractor on some early jobs, so I could prove myself.
If a studio judged your portfolio by its overall level, would it get you hired?

You want to learn storyboarding, but there's never time. I get it. I get up at 4AM.
The most important art task of my day happens before family and work get their turn. It's a choice, and nobody makes it for me.
You don't need 4AM. You need one block of time that belongs to the work, every day. Someday isn't on the calendar. Pick the hour.

You don't need to live in LA to do this job. If you're learning storyboarding online after a day job somewhere else, you're not behind.
Studios accept remote work now. And a story artist moves an audience through emotion, staging and visual choices. That's the part AI can't do.
Keep drawing. You've got this.

If you learn storyboarding online, you see finished drawings. You rarely see the marks working artists put on a board.
Arrows show where the camera goes. Motion lines show what moves and which way. Perspective lines lock the horizon so the next panel cuts cleanly. Those marks are how a director, an editor and an animator read your board without you in the room.
Open your last sequence. Could someone else shoot it from the page?

Want to learn storyboarding? Start by dropping three myths art school may have left you with.
You don't need another degree: studios hire from your portfolio. You don't have to live in LA: studios accept remote work now. And it isn't a talent you're born with: staging, continuity and shot choice are skills, and skills are learned.

Studios hire the sequence, not the single drawing. If your portfolio is full of strong drawings and you still hear nothing back, this is usually the gap.
A pinup shows you can draw. A sequence shows you can tell a story, and that is the job. Shot after shot, can a stranger follow what happens and feel it? Is screen direction consistent? Do the eyelines match?
Lead with your strongest short sequences, and let single illustrations support them.

I graduated from art school with $80K of debt and the wrong portfolio. The rejection letters came back, Dreamworks included, and none of them said why.
I had to learn the hard way what studios actually want: not better drawings, but a portfolio built for the job of storyboarding.
If you're collecting rejection letters right now, you're not out. You're early.

One of these shots by StoryboardArt community mentor Clara Lim @claralim.doodles has been flopped from the original scene. Can you point out which one it is and how it changes the flow of the scene?🤔
When illustrating characters in conversation, it doesn’t matter if it’s storyboards or comic books or any other type of visual storytelling, you should always try to have them “facing each other”.
Although, in comics and other still images, like here in our example, we have the luxury of going back and forth and looking at the images until they make sense.
But in film🎥, we have to keep up with the motion of a scene (besides using the pause button!), making it of utmost importance that the clarity and flow from shot to shot is kept on track.
Once a viewer is lost, it’s a challenge to get them back on track or clear up what they’ve missed visually. And we aren’t trying to make the viewer sound unintelligent, but it’s the story artist’s job to keep that flow coherent!

So which shot do you think in our example scene is ruining the flow❓ Let us know in the comments and…
