Is there a way to know if Genesis was literal or allegorical?

Michael believes there are and that strong evidence can be found using an analysis of grammaticism and statistics. Indeed, some parts of the Bible are allegorical, and some are historic. How do we know which category the first chapters of Genesis fits under? If we consider the Ancient Jews, they always seemed to know if the text was poetic or historic. How did they know that? Is there a method that we can use today to find the answer?

Why is Genesis Important for the Salvation Story?

A lot of people, even some Christians and pastors, will say that the days of Genesis and the Creation have nothing to do with the Salvation story. They think that whether one believes in a literal six twenty-four-hour-day creation or one that takes millions of years, makes no difference to the rest of the Bible. Although the Bible tells us that the world was created in six days, many believe that these were not actually 24-hour time periods but rather epics, or long periods of time that were thousands or even millions of years long. Many people, even Christians, state that the book of Genesis is not to be taken literally but instead poetically. They base their claim off passages in Psalm 90:4 and 2 Peter 3:8 that state that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord. So, which is true? Did the Creation really take millions of years to form, or was it indeed only six days? And is the Bible trustworthy and can it be taken literally? Or is this a contradiction and should really only be read poetically?
