The Wodaabe are pastoral nomads whose lives center on cattle herding.
The Wodaabe place great importance on beauty, elegance, and public display as key elements of cultural identity.
Social values such as self control, patience, and aesthetic refinement are highly respected and expressed through clothing, body decoration, dance, and posture.
Gatherings play an important role in social bonding and marriage selection, allowing young men to display beauty and character while women observe and choose partners according to cultural ideals.
The Gerewol is an annual courtship ritual competition mainly among the nomad people of Niger and Chad.
This is a beauty pageant for the young men so that they might be selected by the girls of the tribe.
Young men dressed in elaborate ornamentation and made up in traditional face painting gather in lines to dance and sing, vying for the attentions of marriageable young women.
The Gerewol occurs each year as the traditionally nomadic Wodaabe cattle herders gather at the southern edge of the Sahara before dispersing south on their dry season pastures.
