A new wild cat species has just been identified!
Scientists have officially described Leopardus tilcayo, a tiny spotted wild cat from Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forest.
It measures only about 18 inches (46 cm) long and weighs around 3 pounds (1.4 kg), making it smaller than the average house cat. Yet genetic research revealed something remarkable: it belongs to a distinct lineage that separated from related tiger cats roughly 1.4 million years ago.
Even more incredible, this is the first new living cat species formally described by science in more than a century. @wildnatureus2024
