How green are electric vehicles, really?

The world is rapidly moving towards electric mobility in the name of a cleaner future. Yet the environmental story does not begin at the charging point.

Battery production requires extensive mining and mineral processing. Manufacturing carries a significant carbon footprint. Electricity used for charging may still come from fossil fuels. Heavier EVs continue to generate tyre and road particulates, while batteries eventually have to be reused or recycled.

There is also another dimension in India's transition to electric mobility: energy security and the strategic need to reduce dependence on imported petroleum.

So, is the electric vehicle truly a "green" vehicle? The answer lies somewhere beyond both the enthusiasm of its promoters and the criticism of its detractors.

A nine hour delay before the train even arrived. A Second AC coach with cockroaches wandering the berths, and a mouse that crossed the floor like it belonged there more than I did.

A fellow passenger, running a high fever, fell asleep holding his bag close. When he woke, his laptop, his cards, and the keys to his own home were gone. No police came. The only response was a complaint filed over the phone, into a system that leads nowhere.

Thirty six hours after I first reached the station, filled with excitement for a journey home, I stepped onto the platform at Kakinada, tired in a way that had nothing to do with distance.

We keep hearing about the transformation underway in Indian Railways. This journey asked a simple question instead: if this is what a premium fare buys, what exactly am I paying for?
