• Execute code on your device
• Establish persistence so it can survive a restart
• Steal credentials, cookies or sensitive data
• Communicate with an attacker’s infrastructure
• Give the attacker a way to move further into the environment

And this is exactly why cybersecurity analysts don’t just ask, “Did the user download a file?”

They look at what happened before, during and after execution.

What actually happens when you click a phishing email? 👀

It’s not always as simple as “you clicked it, so you got hacked.”

A phishing attack can unfold in a few stages:

1️⃣ You click the link
You’re taken to a website or content controlled by the attacker.

2️⃣ The page tries to trick you
It may look like a familiar login page, a document, a delivery notification, or something you’d normally trust.

3️⃣ You interact with it
You might enter your credentials, download a file, enable something, or simply continue through the page.

4️⃣ The attacker gets what they wanted
Depending on the attack, that could be your credentials, information, or an opportunity to get malicious software onto your device.

5️⃣ The attack can continue
Stolen access or a compromised device can potentially be used for further activity.

The important part?

Clicking a phishing link doesn’t automatically mean you’re hacked. What matters is what happened after the click.

Cybersecurity may NOT be for you.

And before you get offended, hear me out. 👀

Everyone online is telling you to get into cybersecurity.

High salaries.
Remote jobs.
Huge demand.

But after working in cybersecurity and mentoring hundreds of people, I’ve seen the other side.

You probably shouldn’t choose cybersecurity if you:

1. Want the salary but hate learning.

Because this industry changes constantly. Your learning doesn’t stop when you get the job.

2. Want an easy entry-level career.

A certification alone won’t magically get you hired. You need to prove you can actually do the work.

3. Give up when things break.

Because troubleshooting something for hours only to realise the problem was one checkbox?

That is VERY normal in cybersecurity.

4. Think cybersecurity is just hacking.

Most days involve a lot more alerts, investigations, documentation, reports and meetings than dramatic hacking scenes.

And finally…

5. You don’t actually enjoy technology.

You don’t need to be obsessed with tech.

But you should be curious about how things work.

Because if you’re only here for the salary…

You might hate the actual job.

So before you start your cybersecurity journey, ask yourself:

Do I actually want the career… or do I just want the idea of it?

The truth?

You build confidence by doing.

You learn by:
✅ Building projects
✅ Applying for roles
✅ Getting feedback
✅ Improving as you go

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one.

Your first cybersecurity job is not the finish line, it’s where your learning accelerates.

It’s about risk, people, technology, decisions, and resilience and understanding how all of them connect.

If you’re a beginner, don’t feel like you need to become a hacker to “belong” in cybersecurity.
