An Indianapolis man is accused of killing his mother and stepfather in a brutal attack — and police say a witness fought to stop him.
According to new court filings, officers responded to Lakeshire Lane on Sunday after a 911 caller reported a man actively stabbing his father in a driveway.
A witness told detectives he heard strange moaning, stepped outside and saw David White striking his 80-year-old stepfather’s neck and face with a shovel. The witness said he believed White was trying to decapitate him.
The witness ran toward White and yelled, causing him to run in the house. Investigators say White came back out and charged the witness with a shovel in one hand and a kitchen knife in the other.
The witness wrestled the shovel away. White then allegedly began cutting his stepfather’s neck and stabbing his midsection before retreating into the house again.
Police followed a blood trail through the garage and into the home, where they found White’s 75-year-old mother dead on the floor with severe injuries to her neck and face. Investigators recovered a bloodied garden shovel and garden shears near her body.
Officers found White in a nearby bathroom, soaking wet and wearing only underwear. He was taken into custody. His stepfather later died at the hospital.
When a detective attempted to explain his Miranda rights, White said he did not want to answer questions because “they” had been holding him against his will, according to the affidavit.
White is preliminarily charged with two counts of murder. Police say he had a documented history of mental health issues and they had responded to the home before.

A former star of the show LIVE PD is accused of threatening to unleash violence against his former colleagues in a series of disturbing text messages that triggered a SWAT response at his Greenfield home.
Stuart Bishop, 40, is facing three counts of intimidation for allegedly sending threatening messages targeting multiple Lawrence, IN police officers after a bitter falling-out with the department and a failed romantic relationship with a fellow officer.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Bishop told a former coworker that he planned to show up at the Lawrence Police Department and provoke officers into shooting him.
"I'm abt to create havoc and make one of those pussies fuckin pull the trigger," Bishop allegedly texted.
In another message, he declared, "I've got it out for that whole department at this point."
Police say the threats came amid a complicated personal dispute involving Bishop and several current Lawrence officers.
According to court documents, Bishop had previously been romantically involved with a female officer. She told investigators she ended the relationship because Bishop continued having an affair with his wife.
Investigators say Bishop began repeatedly texting the officer on October 5, making increasingly alarming statements.
Among the alleged messages:
"My rage is through the roof right now. Already destroyed a couple of chairs."
"Let me catch one of you fake mother fuckers slippin. I'm all about Violence at this point."
"One last message, then I'm fuckin pulling the trigger."
Police say Bishop also sent the woman a photograph of himself holding a handgun against his head and blamed her for his condition. She eventually blocked him on her phone and social media.
Bishop allegedly continued sending threatening messages to another former colleague, saying he would visit Lawrence during the middle shift and suggesting he wanted officers to kill him.
The threats were serious enough that Lawrence police contacted Greenfield police, who obtained a search warrant and called in the Hancock County Joint Tactical Team.
On the morning of October 6, SWAT officers surrounded Bishop's Greenfield home. An officer who knew Bishop called him, and Bishop agreed to come outside. He surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.
Bishop reportedly told investigators he sent the messages while experiencing a breakdown and insisted he never intended to hurt any officers. He said he felt abandoned by his former department and had stopped seeing a therapist after becoming unemployed.
Bishop was arrested for a DUI over the summer which lead to his separation Lawrence PD.
Bishop is being held without bond until his initial hearing which is scheduled for Monday.
