How I Got Good at Guitar

If you want to be able to pick up the guitar and play music that feels creative and expressive, the looper is one of the best ways to practice developing that skill.

I have a new video dedicated to this. Check it out if you want to start feeling like an actual creative musician with the guitar

How I Got Good at Guitar

I have 2 questions for all the intermediate guitarists.

What are your 3 most painful problems on the instrument?

and...

What are your 3 deepest desires you wish to achieve on the instrument?

Your answers will directly shape the content and support I create here. The more specific you are, the more I can tailor what I post to help you solve those exact problems and move you toward those goals

How I Got Good at Guitar

Working on an exciting project that will help so many intermediate guitarists finally break out of the "scale jail" and start improvising through chord changes with total confidence and creativity.

Anyone excited?

How I Got Good at Guitar

After achieving the ability to improvise through chord changes and play creatively across the entire fretboard…

it’s now my mission to help as many intermediate-level guitarists as possible who are stuck in “scale jail” achieve the ability to understand how to solo through chord changes and create their own musical ideas without confusion or frustration in the next few months.

How I Got Good at Guitar

Let’s celebrate!

I used to be unable to improvise melodically or come up with ideas all over the neck. I had no how to make progress without getting frustrated and putting the instrument down for the day.

I sucked because I had no clear pathway or roadmap showing me what I needed to focus on in order to achieve my goals.

But then, after years of making very little progress, I figured out a simple system that connects triads and chord tones all across the fretboard. I call this system “triad trees”.

This led me to the point where I could create my own beautiful music from scratch. Whenever I pick up a guitar in a store, I make up my own ideas. People ask me what song I am playing, and when I tell them I just came up with it myself, they are quite impressed. I think they are glad to hear something that isn’t another Led Zeppelin or Metallica riff.

I couldn’t be more grateful for reaching this stage on the guitar.

I have a free group where I am offering guidance and practical advice for guitarists who have the problems I used to have. You can join here:

If I could help you achieve one result on the guitar, what would you want my help with?

How I Got Good at Guitar

If I could go back to when I was first learning the guitar and give myself one piece of advice…

It wouldn’t be “practice for 10 hours a day” or “learn to sweep pick.”

It would be this:

Learn how to play chords everywhere on the neck.

I came across a video this morning where a guitarist talks about a realisation he had when learning a John Mayer song.

He talked about how, at first glance, the riff to "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room" seemed like a load of complicated embellishments.

When taking some time to work on the song, he realised that every note he was playing existed around chord shapes he already knew about.

This connection helped him realise how to start connecting scale melodies with chord tones from chord shapes, and then move all of this stuff around to multiple places on the fretboard.

This is what most guitarists don't understand about triad shapes: they teach you how to play chords anywhere you want on the neck, and then once you can do that, you can break down tiny fragments of these shapes to play melodic lines.

Eventually, you start to connect where these triad shapes fit inside the scale patterns you are already familiar with.

This is when the fretboard really starts to open up.

You start to see how all of these different things you have been learning that kinda felt like a waste of time are actually all interconnected, and now you suddenly have a use for all of them.

You can check out the YouTube video I am talking about below; it's not too long, and it's an interesting video to watch.

PS: I am working hard on making a course that teaches guitarists a system to understand how to find triads anywhere you want on the fretboard, start using those triads to play chord progressions and then start fitting those triads inside of pentatonic shapes to improvise melodically through the chord changes.

I am doing my best to make this course an experience that delivers genuine results for guitarists.

To achieve this goal, I need feedback from you guys.

That's why I'm offering up some beta testing spots for this course.

How I Got Good at Guitar

We just hit 15,000 subscribers — and honestly, I’m beyond grateful. I never expected all of this to happen in just 10 months 🙏

Thank you for watching, practising, asking questions, showing up for yourself, and trusting me enough to listen to my videos.

This channel exists for one reason:
To help intermediate guitarists finally break through the confusion, unlock the fretboard, and feel free when they play, without needing a music degree or wasting years guessing their way to success.

Seeing your comments, your breakthroughs, and your progress feels very rewarding.

I would really appreciate your thoughts to help me help you even more:

1. What’s been the biggest “aha” moment or breakthrough you’ve had from these videos so far?

2. What’s still confusing, frustrating, or holding you back right now?

3. If you could magically master ONE thing on the guitar in the next 30 days, what would it be?

I read every comment. I’m building everything I create around your real struggles and goals.

Your feedback will directly shape the next steps for this channel and beyond.

Thank you again for your support.
