Beyond the Badge: Inside the Bars
**The badge tells people what you are authorized to do.
The basin tells them who you have decided to become.**
Every shift will test you.
People will disappoint you. Inmates will challenge you. Coworkers may let you down. Supervisors may misunderstand you. The culture can make cynicism feel normal, isolation feel necessary, and hardness feel like strength.
But Jesus calls Christian officers to lead differently.
LEADING WELL BEHIND THE BADGE is a practical Christian leadership guide written specifically for men and women serving in corrections and law enforcement.
Drawing from the example of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet in John 13, Carey L. Randall challenges officers to examine not only what they carry on their duty belt—but what they carry in their hearts.
Christian leadership is not about becoming weak.
It is about becoming strong enough to lay down the things that quietly begin controlling you.
Inside this book, you’ll learn how to:
• Lay down the fear of being hurt, rejected, or criticized
• Recognize and confront insecurity before it affects your leadership
• Stop depending on recognition and approval to remain faithful
• Lead by feeding and developing others instead of waiting to be fed
• Receive correction without allowing pride or perfectionism to take control
• Trust God when the situation, assignment, or season does not make sense
• Refuse the split life between Sunday faith and workplace behavior
• Fight isolation and build healthy Christian relationships
• Remain firm without allowing the job to harden your heart
• Finish your career with your faith, family, character, and integrity intact
More than a leadership book — designed to be used, not simply read.
Each chapter includes:
• FROM THE FLOOR – realistic situations from actual correctional and law-enforcement work
• FOR THE SHIFT – practical actions you can apply immediately
• QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION – challenging questions that move the lesson into your life
• PRAYERS FOR THE SHIFT – faith-centered prayers for the pressures you carry
• JOURNAL & REFLECTION PAGES – space to identify what needs to change and what needs to be laid down
Includes the LEADING WELL 10-Week Leadership Practice focused on:
Offense • Identity • Serving Others • Hidden Faithfulness • Humility • Trust • Integrity • Community • A Living Heart • Finishing Well
Use it individually or with Christian officer groups, correctional chaplains, law-enforcement ministries, Bible studies, leadership groups, supervisors, and first-responder ministries.
You already know how to wear the uniform.
The greater question is: Who are you becoming underneath it?
Pick up the towel.
Keep the badge clean.
Tell the truth.
Serve faithfully.
— Carey L. Randall

Beyond the Badge: Inside the Bars
The Basin and the Badge
John 13:1–17
On the night He was betrayed, Jesus did something no ranking officer in
that room expected. He rose from supper, laid aside His outer garment, tied
a towel around His waist, poured water into a basin, and began to wash the
disciples’ feet. Then He said the words that stand over this entire book:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master,
nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.”
John 13:16
That is not a verse for a wall plaque. It is a job description. If you follow
Christ and you wear a badge, you are not excused from the towel. You are
assigned to it.
Correctional and law enforcement leadership is often taught as control:
control the population, control the scene, control the narrative, control
yourself. Control matters. Disorder hurts people. But Christian leadership
does not begin with what you grip. It begins with what you are willing to lay
down.
Jesus could wash feet because His identity was not at risk. John tells us
He knew the Father had given all things into His hands, that He had come
from God, and that He was going to God. Secure people can serve. Insecure
people must dominate, withdraw, or perform. The same is true on a tier, in a
briefing, and in a supervisor’s office.

Beyond the Badge: Inside the Bars
Leadership is a magnifying glass. It does not only reveal the people you supervise. It reveals you. Give a person a radio, a set of keys, a rank, or even informal influence on a shift, and whatever was hidden in them begins to show. Insecurity is one of the first things the glass enlarges.
Ministry will often attack or expose insecurity. So will corrections. So will the street. The job has a way of finding the exact place you are unsure of yourself. A loud inmate. A younger officer who seems more confident. A supervisor who never praises. A mistake you cannot stop replaying. Suddenly the question is not, “What is the right action?” The question becomes, “What will this say about me?”

Beyond the Badge: Inside the Bars
Prison can harden a man, numb a man, or awaken a man to his need for God.
90 Days Behind the Walls is a Christian devotional written specifically for men living behind prison walls.
This is not a generic devotional with prison language added afterward. Each daily reading connects Scripture to the realities of incarceration—counts, lockdowns, commissary, conflict, loneliness, family separation, temptation, regret, waiting, authority, and the long road toward change.
For 90 days, readers are encouraged to meet God exactly where they are and take one practical spiritual step at a time. Look it up on AMAZON...
