Election season is here, and every political party is lining up to promise fixes for your wallet.
From breaking up the supermarkets, to supercharging your KiwiSaver, and getting a handle on house prices... they all have a fix in mind, but would they actually work?
Bernard Hickey has been watching it unfold, and thinks our politicians need to think bigger, to face some of the economic realities New Zealanders are dealing with.
Because why do we produce enough food for 40 million people, and yet so many are struggling to afford the supermarket?
Should we be changing our KiwiSaver to have the high contributions of Australia... when we don't get the tax breaks they do, to sweeten the deal?
And when so many of our problems are caused by overseas crises, is it realistic to expect our politicians to have a fix at all?
No stone unturned as we look at the money issues heading our way this election, so don't miss this episode of Making Cents.

There's a new person checking the rules on your Kiwisaver and that means the rules might be about to change.
David Boyle has just started as New Zealand's Retirement Commissioner.
It comes after years of working in the financial industry, helping people build wealth through the sharemarket and managed funds.
Now he's switching teams, going from the private sector to public, to help the average NZer can build a nest egg that they can rely on.
So are we getting KiwiSaver right or wrong at the moment? What needs to change - and should it be you and me making changes, or the government?
We're breaking down all of it on the latest Making Cents podcast, linked in the comments!

With the job market totally borked right now, what about if you created your own job? And you did it by having your own business?
And what if you did that with less risk? Instead of starting a business and hoping it works, you buy one, with a proven track record?
Look, that's a little bit of a sunshine and roses perspective, it’s clearly a more complicated than that. But it's far from impossible. It's a solid idea that can really work... if you do it right.
Someone who has ringside seats to that? Jess Shaw.
She’s the director of Vesta Finance, and she’s seen an interesting trend - her clients are looking to buy businesses like an asset class, as if it was property, or shares.
How does that even work?
We're laying it all out on the latest Making Cents podcast.

Imagine you're doing everything right. You work hard to save up a house deposit. Finally get a house. Make repairs. Make some mortgage repayments.
Then after ten years, you realise buying that home made you WORSE off than if you'd simply dumped that deposit into the sharemarket, and kept renting instead.
Except that's exactly what happened to Janika ter Ellen. She's Stuff's Property Reporter, so she's not exactly anti-property.
But when she ran the numbers, she was truly surprised.
Worse off, for putting that money into buying her own home.
So what went wrong, and is buying your own home a bad idea?
We went through it on the latest Making Cents podcast, don't miss it.
