Strahov Monastery dates back to 1143, and its library preserves centuries of European history. Prague City Tourism lists around 200,000 volumes, including rare manuscripts and early printed books.

The Theological Hall, built in the 1670s, and the Philosophical Hall, completed in the late 18th century, are known for their painted ceilings and historic collections. The Philosophical Hall’s ceiling fresco reflects the history of human knowledge.

More than an impressive library, Strahov preserves books and ideas passed down through generations.

Joemax Kiamco

St. Nicholas Church, Malá Strana, Prague — built between the late 17th and mid-18th centuries, it represents High Baroque architecture through its monumental dome, dynamic spatial design and extensive fresco decoration. Its construction reflects the work of Christoph and Kilián Ignaz Dientzenhofer and Anselmo Lurago, within the religious and artistic context of the Jesuit era.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, St John’s Archcathedral is an important part of Poland’s history and Catholic Christian heritage.

During World War II, the cathedral was devastated by Nazi German forces, particularly during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Rebuilt between 1947 and 1952, it became part of Warsaw’s wider postwar reconstruction.

Under communist rule, Catholic Christian faith remained an important part of Polish society, despite political pressure and restrictions on religious life.

On 2 June 1979, Pope John Paul II addressed the faithful at the cathedral during his first pilgrimage to communist Poland. He connected its destruction and reconstruction with Christ’s Resurrection, describing the rebuilt cathedral as a sign of renewed Polish and Catholic Christian life.

John Paul II later became an influential moral figure in Poland’s opposition to communism. His emphasis on human dignity, religious freedom and solidarity contributed to the wider movement for political change, alongside Solidarity, Polish workers and other opposition groups.

Today, the cathedral’s Gothic architecture, sacred art and reconstruction reflect the relationship between Polish history, Catholic Christian faith and cultural identity.
