Our History Underfoot

Our History Underfoot explores forgotten places, old railways, canals, and historic infrastructure through walking and outdoor exploration.

These videos focus on the history we still walk over every day — often hidden in plain sight beneath our feet. From abandoned railway lines and lost stations to reservoirs, bridges, and industrial remains, each walk uncovers how the past continues to shape the landscapes around us.

This channel was previously known as Trekking Exploration. The name has changed to better reflect the shared history, slower pace, and place-based storytelling that now defines the channel.

New videos document Britain’s overlooked and disappearing past — one walk at a time.

NEW VIDEO!

THE WATER IS RISING… AND DERWENT VILLAGE IS DISAPPEARING ONCE AGAIN

After weeks of rain, Ladybower Reservoir has risen by around 1.5 metres. I’ve returned for one final look at the old village ruins still exposed along the shoreline — before they slip beneath the water once more.

Derwent Village is once again getting swallowed, how much longer will we be able to see it?

Have you ever seen the ruins of Derwent Hall at Ladybower Reservoir and wondered what each room actually was?**
Mike joins me at the exposed ruins with something rather special — a floorplan of the lost Hall.
Together, we set out to identify the rooms and work out what we're looking at among the remains of this once-grand country house.

It's fascinating to piece together the history of Derwent Hall and imagine what life was like here before Ladybower Reservoir submerged the valley.
