THE ROBITOH OF SHEIKH ADAM IS AN IDEOLOGY, NOT A TITLE — GRAND MUFTI

LUKMAN SOLAHUDEEN AYYUBI

The Grand Mufti of Yorubaland, Sheikh Daood Imran Molaasan has described the Robitoh of Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al-Ilory as an enduring ideology rather than a ceremonial title, emphasizing that its true essence lies in the pursuit of Islamic revival, reform, scholarship, and the advancement of the Muslim Ummah.

Speaking at the inauguration of the League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta in Ibadan on Saturday, 27 June 2026, the Grand Mufti said the legacy of Sheikh Adam Al-Ilory embodies service, unity, leadership, and dedication to Islam, transcending positions and personalities.

He paid tribute to the respected elders of the Robitoh , commending their immense sacrifices and contributions to the spread and growth of Islam across Yorubaland.

“Our Babas in the Robitoh have done remarkably well. Their contributions to the growth of Islam deserve our respect, appreciation, and continued support,” he said.

Addressing concerns about the establishment of the new League, the Grand Mufti stressed that it was not created to rival or replace existing leadership structures, but to complement their efforts in addressing contemporary challenges facing Muslims in the region.

“The League of Imams and Alfas was established to support our fathers, not to compete with them. We are their sons, not their rivals. Our mission is to build on their legacy and work together for the unity, progress, and development of the Muslim Ummah,” he stated.

According to him, the changing realities confronting Muslims in Yorubaland require renewed commitment, innovative ideas, and stronger collaboration among Islamic scholars and leaders.

The Grand Mufti expressed optimism that the inauguration of the League marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Islam in Yorubaland, noting that the organisation will work alongside established Islamic institutions to strengthen leadership, promote unity, and address emerging challenges facing the Ummah.

He called on Muslim scholars, Imams, Alfas, and other stakeholders to embrace cooperation and mutual respect, stressing that only through a shared sense of purpose can the foundations laid by previous generations be strengthened for the benefit of future generations.

Bandits Cannot Speak for Islam or Call for Shariah

It is both surprising and misleading to hear claims that bandits and criminals are demanding Shariah. Individuals who engage in kidnapping, banditry, murder, and other criminal activities are acting in direct violation of the teachings of Islam and the principles of Shariah.

Shariah is a constitutional right of Muslims, and every Muslim has the right to practice and seek its application within the framework of the law. However, its implementation must follow lawful, established, and legitimate procedures.

Why, then, do some people persist in linking criminal acts to Islam? Are we expected to believe that those who openly disregard Islamic teachings are sincerely advocating for the very laws and values they violate on a daily basis?

Attributing the actions of criminals to Islam serves neither truth nor justice. It only promotes misunderstanding, fuels prejudice, and distracts from the real issues at hand. Those who spread such narratives should be asked to provide evidence rather than rely on assumptions and stereotypes.

Truth and falsehood cannot remain equal forever. False narratives may gain temporary attention, but in the end, truth will prevail.

Our League of Imams to Partner with Muslim Professionals

A new phase has begun in the journey of Islam in Yorubaland. With the formal inauguration of the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, a renewed vision has emerged, one that seeks not only spiritual guidance but structured development for the Muslim Ummah.

Since Nigeria’s independence in 1960, Yoruba Muslims have been active participants in politics, governance, education, and commerce. Many have served as party leaders, members of the House of Representatives, senators, commissioners, and advisers. Yet, despite this visible political presence, there has been growing concern that institutional Islamic development in Yorubaland has not received coordinated attention.

We believe that Islamic progress must move beyond individual achievements. True development requires structured, collective institutions owned and managed by the Ummah, not by individuals, families, or private interests. Examples of such structural development include: Muslim Ummah hospitals, Colleges of education and higher institutions rooted in Islamic values, Islamic financial systems that operate on Sharia compliant principles, Cooperative societies and economic empowerment platforms.
These are the kinds of institutions that strengthen a community for generations.

The newly established League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Edo and Delta is committed to working closely with Muslim professionals across various sectors, doctors, lawyers, academics, economists, engineers, bankers, media practitioners, and entrepreneurs. This partnership is essential because Scholars provide spiritual guidance and moral direction, while professionals bring technical expertise, policy knowledge, and administrative capacity. When these forces unite, transformation becomes possible.

Our League of Imams envisions Structured educational reform, Health sector initiatives under Muslim management, Stronger Islamic economic platforms, Coordinated advocacy for Muslim rights and interests, and Strategic youth empowerment programs that will assist nation's development.

It aims to serve as a central front for coordination, protection, and advancement of Islamic interests in Yorubaland. This is not about division or confrontation; it is about organization, dignity, and sustainable development.

Islam is not merely a personal faith. it is a complete way of life that encompasses education, economics, healthcare, social welfare, and governance ethics. For these dimensions to flourish, structure is necessary.

This establishment marks a significant milestone. By collaborating with Muslim professionals, it seeks to build enduring institutions that will uplift the Ummah and secure its future. The time has come for transformation. The time has come for structured development. The time has come for unity with purpose. With collective effort, wisdom, and sincerity, Yoruba Islam can enter a new era of strength, stability, and progress.

Without Islam, Nations May Exist But They Will Struggle to Survive

History bears clear witness that societies devoid of divine guidance descend easily into chaos. Before the advent of Islam, much of the world was engulfed in darkness, marked by oppression, unchecked violence, injustice, and moral decay. Human life had little value, and power was sustained through cruelty and bloodshed.

The coming of Islam through Prophet Muhammad (saw) marked a turning point in human civilization. Islam did not merely introduce a new faith; it reformed society, purified moral consciousness, and restored dignity to humanity. Through its message of justice, accountability, and mercy, Islam transformed communities that were once trapped in barbarism into centers of civilization and ethical order.

The Roman Empire, often celebrated for its might, was equally notorious for its atrocities, exploitation, and moral corruption. It was the spread of Islam, with its insistence on justice, sanctity of life, and equality before the law that challenged and eventually dismantled such oppressive systems. History repeatedly confirms Islam’s role as a force for societal reform and human liberation.

At the heart of a safe and functional society lies Amanah—trust. Trust in leadership, trust in institutions, trust among citizens. Islam places amanah at the core of human responsibility, making it a sacred duty rather than a mere moral suggestion. This trust, by divine design, is a value Islam nurtures deeply in the believer.

Today, the failure of many government institutions and public agencies can be traced to the collapse of amanah. Corruption thrives, justice is delayed or denied, and leadership has become self-serving. These failures persist because the moral foundation that sustains trust is absent.

More painful, however, is the reality that Muslims themselves have drifted from unity. The absence of amanah is closely tied to the absence of a united Ummah. Disunity weakens moral authority, fragments purpose, and renders Muslims ineffective in addressing both their own challenges and those of the wider society.

In a divided nation, a united Muslim Ummah is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Unity empowers Muslims to restore trust, promote justice, and contribute meaningfully to national stability and development. Through unity, Muslims can solve their internal problems and become a source of peace and balance in the societies they inhabit.

Islam remains humanity’s most reliable compass for survival, morally, socially, and politically. Without it, nations may exist, but they will struggle to survive.
