🎓 I Can Trace Part of My College Story Back to A Different World

I didn’t attend an HBCU, but I can absolutely trace part of my decision to go to college back to watching A Different World.

Seeing young Black students learning, growing, finding their voices, building friendships, and preparing for their futures made college feel like a place where I belonged, too.

My road eventually led me to North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, where journalism, radio and video production—and especially my time at WONC-FM—helped lay the foundation for the communicator and producer I am today.

That’s one reason this new generation of A Different World hits differently for me. Nearly four decades later, a television show that helped inspire my college dreams gets another opportunity to do the same for somebody else.
Same Black Girl. Bigger Dreams. ❤️🖤

Tonight, Coach Tony Thompson and I are talking about the original series, the new sequel, and whether this new generation at Hillman lives up to that incredible legacy on Talk on Tuesdays.

🎬 DID YOU KNOW?

Parrish Smith spent THREE YEARS creating The Scroll and interviewed more than 50 spiritual leaders in the process.

We're talking about an extraordinary collection of voices: T.D. Jakes, Bernice A. King, Al Sharpton Jr., Shirley Caesar, Hezekiah Walker, Marvin Sapp, Jamal Bryant, Noel Jones, Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. and many more.

And The Scroll didn't stop with the screen.

The documentary was licensed across multiple platforms and networks, and the project eventually became a book authored by Parrish Smith and published through Kensington Books.

That's storytelling with LEGS. 👏🏾

And Tuesday, we get to talk to the filmmaker behind it.

🎂💜 **Happy Heavenly 63rd Birthday to Whitney Houston—THE VOICE.**

August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012.

There are singers we enjoy, and then there are singers whose voices become attached to moments in our lives. Whitney Houston is one of those artists for me.

Of course I love classics like “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and I'll always love hearing Whitney and Mariah Carey together on “When You Believe.”

But two Whitney performances have always hit me differently:

🎶 **“All the Man That I Need”**—a love song that I've always been able to hear through a spiritual lens. Something about Whitney's delivery makes me think about being completely filled by God's love.

🙏🏾 **“I Love the Lord”**—from *The Preacher's Wife*. THAT song helped carry me through some difficult times while I was living in New York.

That's the power of a great voice. Decades later, it can take you right back to where you were, what you felt, and sometimes what you survived.

I wish Whitney were still here to see the generations of vocalists she influenced.

But I'm grateful that I got to experience her brilliance while she was here.

Happy Birthday, Whitney. 💜🎤
