Gadget Talk

Last week the Gadget Talk channel pasted 30K subscribers. Holy cow. When starting this I would have never guessed we'd get that big. While certainly not a "silver plaque" sized channel, I'm very greatful to all of you who have clicked subscribe. Thank You!

Did you know that the UV-5R Anniversary Edition radio receives air band? It's not on the spec sheet but it does. I don't have a recent UV-5R plain version so I have no idea when that capability was added. I wonder what other little hidden things are included!

In case you missed it, the Retevis/Ailunce HA1G and HA1UV are now supported by Chirp. They showed up on the supported radio list recently.

This note is mainly for my GMRS subscribers but hams might be interested, too.

My friends at Retevis who occasionally provide products to review asked that I let you know about a new product and tight timelines due to tariffs.

If you've looked at the Retevis RT97 GMRS repeater in a small weatherproof box, they asked me to let you know that they have a 3rd generation model that will ship soon. It's not inexpensive but if you are looking for a personal repeater for your neighborhood watch or farm operation, this might meet the need.

The 3d Generation product has a 25 what output as opposed to the previous 10 watt output. It also has a Raspberry Pi input. among other enhancements.

To beat a May 2 deadline, orders must be received by April 23. After that date, price hikes due to tariffs may apply.

I've included a link to the product for you to explore (affiliate) and a discount code for 10% off.

Heading off to the Quartzfest Ham campout on Friday, Jan 17th for the next 7 or 8 days. Dry camping in the desert just south of Quartzsite, AZ. I'm on the calendar for a presentation on Wednesday at 2PM. Stop by and say hello if you're attending.

I'll also be doing some recording on two new camping communications tools I recently purchased. One is the new Starlink Mini and the other is a the fairly new (August 26th, 2024) Anker Solix C300 DC portable power station with some lightweight solar panels.

Both Quartzsite and my favorite summer camping spots have terrible cell and data coverage. Hopefully these camping upgrades will help.

A special thanks to all of my subscribers. Overnight (Nov 5), the Gadget Talk channel passed 20,000 subscribers. We're still a fairly small channel, but your support warms my heart. Thank you.

Be on the lookout for a new video review of the Ailunce HA1G GMRS HT. This is a pretty cool little GMRS HT.

The video will release early Friday, Aug 30th.
