Song Travels, Episode 1 is here! 🌙

In our first conversation from the Root Cellar Music Studio control room, ‪@lauracatherinekuhlman‬ asks me: “How do you help artists bring their songs to life?”

I share the story behind producing ‪@MerenEdnaMarieKing‬'s Oh! The Moon! — from a beautifully spare demo of voice, hand drum, and recorder to the finished recording.

Hear how the song grew through pre-production: guitar chords that opened up the melody, a newly expanded bridge and modulation, Meren’s djembe, a tuned bodhrán, bass, guitars, and layered backing vocals.

This episode includes clips of Meren’s original demo alongside the master she released last year. It’s a small window into the collaborative choices that help a song become more fully itself.

Meren joined us at Root Cellar last year while working on her album Of Dragons and Moonlight, which features Oh! The Moon! We’re grateful to have been part of her musical journey.

August is moving fast at Root Cellar Music Studio. 🎶

Huge congrats to futon on the release of their new EP, Sunburst—we had the pleasure of producing, recording, mixing, and mastering three of its five songs. It’s streaming everywhere now.

We’re also deep in the final mixes for a new 10-song LP with Park Doing, wrapping mixes for three new songs with ‪@ExchangeBLVD‬, and recently tracked lead and backing vocals with Gunnar Gouge for Sediment’s upcoming single.

On the hardware side, we now have a fourth Universal Audio Apollo x8P, enabling us to record 32 mics at once—perfect for capturing full bands playing live together.

And our new Mac Studio is up and running to keep everything moving smoothly.

Lots of great music in the works.

For “The Veil (A Mountain Song),” he brought the kind of voice that can’t be faked—all grit, urgency, and conviction.

These are raw, unedited takes: the first sparks of a rock ’n’ roll song coming alive in real time.

One of the questions I get from bands is, "Can you really make guitars sound that much bigger after they've already been recorded?"

The answer is yes—if the performance was captured correctly.

One of the most powerful tools I use during production is reamping.

It allows us to take a direct input (DI) guitar performance and send it back through tube amps, speaker cabinets, and microphones to transform the tone without asking the guitarist to play the part again.

In this YouTube video, I’ll walk through a session from a song I produced for ‪@TomAtkinsBand‬ (featuring George Lynch of Dokken).

You’ll hear the original guitar tracks recorded through a digital amp modeler compared to the reamped version.

It’s a great example of what happens when a solid DI performance is paired with great tube amps, speakers, microphones, and a recording chain built for making records.

This isn't about saying modelers are "bad."

They're incredible tools, especially for live performance and even many recording situations.

But when the goal is making a record that hits hard and feels alive, there's still something special about moving real air through great speakers into great microphones.
