For this version, I went with a sofa and accent chairs instead of a large sectional.

It gives the room a completely different feeling while keeping the same organic modern color palette—warm neutrals, olive green, black and touches of brass.

This is exactly why I like trying 2–3 floor plans before buying furniture.

One of my favorite things about creating floor plans first is seeing just how differently the same room can function depending on the furniture you choose.

But here’s the thing…

I would NEVER start by choosing all of this furniture.

The floor plan comes first.

Once I know the furniture sizes and layout actually work in the room, THEN I create the mood board and start sourcing.

I’ve been updating my 20-year-old kitchen without renovating it, and these are 10 purchases that I think made the biggest impact.

And surprisingly, some of my favorites were also some of the least expensive.

I didn’t replace the cabinets.
I didn’t replace the countertops.
I didn’t replace the backsplash.

Instead, I focused on smaller updates—faucet, hardware, lighting, artwork, textiles and styling—and together they made the kitchen feel completely different.
