The more we know, the safer we paddle. Not all Canadian paddleboarding requirements are widely known, so I thought I'd put together this quick guide as a reminder before your next paddle.

💬 Which of these requirements do you think more paddlers should know about?
Most people know paddle boards for something fun to do at the beach or paddling day trips, but fewer realize they can be used for backcountry travel.
Over the years, I’ve taken SUPs on multi-day backcountry routes and it always surprises people that this is even possible.
A few things that usually come up: • where all the gear goes • how stable they are when loaded • whether portaging is involved • how to actually get started
If you’re curious about the details, I’ve written a blog that breaks down what backcountry SUP travel actually looks like gear setup, planning, and what to expect on the water.
I also run guided backcountry paddle board trips for anyone who wants to experience it without figuring out all the logistics alone. Everything is set up for you, route planning, instruction, meals, and camping gear. You can feel safe, supported and focus on the experience itself.

Have you ever thought about taking your paddle board beyond day trips?
From calm, beginner-friendly paddles to more adventurous routes, these are some of my favourite Ontario spots to explore by paddle board.
📍Rockwood Conservation Area 📍Bon Echo Provincial Park 📍Barron Canyon, Algonquin Park 📍Bruce Peninsula 📍Katherine Cove, Lake Superior Provincal Park
Each one offers something completely different - shorter route, pictographs, canyon cliffs, turquoise shoreline, and rugged Lake Superior scenery.
Most of these can be beginner-friendly with the right route and calm conditions, while others offer opportunities to build confidence and explore farther.
Just finished my Wilderness First Responder course.
If you spend time in the outdoors, this kind of training changes how you see things.
Not just skills; awareness, decision-making, and confidence in situations you hope you never face.
And honestly, one of the best parts was the people. Different backgrounds, different experience levels, all showing up to learn from the course and each other.
It’s a good reminder that putting yourself back in learning environments as an adult is always worth it.
Paddling into places you can’t drive to. Choosing effort over ease. Arriving somewhere you once thought was out of reach. Sitting lakeside with people who showed up ready to grow.

Yeah… I’m not done yet. ☀️🌊
There’s still a whole lot of summer left.
