A collodion baby is a newborn covered at birth by a tight, shiny, transparent skin-like membrane. It happens because the outer layer of the skin does not develop normally before birth.

The membrane usually peels off over the first few weeks, revealing the baby's underlying skin. Most importantly, these babies need careful care to prevent dehydration, infection, temperature problems, and skin cracking.

In simple words: โ€œA baby born wrapped in a tight, shiny membrane that later sheds, revealing the skin underneath.โ€

Elephantiasis means a body part becomes very large and swollen because the lymphatic system, which normally drains extra fluid from tissues, is not working properly.

In a newborn, true elephantiasis caused by the filarial worm is extremely unlikely. If a baby is born with a very swollen leg, arm, or genital area, it is more likely due to a problem in the lymph vessels that developed before birth.

So, in a newborn, we would usually call it congenital lymphedema, rather than true elephantiasis.

If you have a premature baby, do watch the Premature Baby Care playlist on my channel. โค๏ธ

Every video covers an important aspect of caring for premature babies. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is especially important because premature babies cannot maintain their body temperature well.

Iโ€™ve explained KMC, keeping your baby warm, and how a KMC room should be set up.

Do watch the complete playlist. Every video has something important to teach you. โค๏ธ

This video shows a male newborn admitted just minutes after birth. He presents with rare and striking anomalies. The neonatal team faces immediate challenges. Every minute counts in managing this critical case. Watch to the end to see how this rare story unfolds.

Cryptophthalmos ("hidden eye") is a rare congenital anomaly where eyelids fail to form, causing skin to pass directly from the forehead to the cheek over a malformed eyeball. It results in absent palpebral fissures, usually with underlying eye defects like microphthalmia. It is often associated with Fraser syndrome (syndactyly, genitourinary defects).

Your Baby Has #Ichthyosis? Watch This First!

Ichthyosis is a rare genetic skin disorder that affects newborns, often referred to as "Collodion babies" due to their distinctive appearance. These infants are born with tight, shiny, and scaly skin that resembles a translucent membrane, like collodion. This condition can be emotionally challenging for parents, but with proper care, these babies can thrive.

The fact that you religiously take care of your patient, giving your sincere effort until they survive, is a feeling that brings more than satisfaction. It gives you something priceless. ๐Ÿคฒโค๏ธ Her grani asked my name to specifically pray for me. She says she will do that forever. Big thing!

This little baby recovered from extreme sepsis and recurrent cyanotic spells caused by thick mucosal secretions. The frequent accumulation of these secretions created a picture almost resembling cyanotic heart disease, with the baby struggling and almost gasping for breath.

We resuscitated her quite a few times, thinking she might have given up on life. But every single time, she fought back and recovered.

Putting her on CPAP was one of the best decisions we made, while nebulization and frequent suctioning helped tremendously, along with appropriate antibiotic coverage.

Sometimes, never giving up is the most beautiful thing you can do.

By the way, did you notice the beautiful eyes of the baby? Honestlyโ€ฆ it was all because I fell for those beautiful eyes. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿฅนโค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚
