Big news regarding horse-drawn carriages is coming out of New York City today.
Mayor Mamdani posted on X (formerly twitter) yesterday stating: “The horse carriage industry is coming to an end in New York City. Our administration will make sure workers and owners are protected and the horses are safe.”
This is the first official statement confirming that the Mayor and city counsel leaders have agreed to ban horse drawn carriages from the city for good after nearly 150 years of the practice.
The city counsel is expected to vote on and pass a bill titled, “Romanch's Law,” next Thursday that will phase out horse-drawn carriage rides completely by June 2028.
The bill also includes provisions to assist carriage owners and workers to complete the transition out of the industry.
This renewed push for a carriage ban comes after 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan died after a runaway carriage incident in June of this year.
The bill is expected to pass next week and has much support behind it, but what do you think?
