I make dozens—and sometimes hundreds—of versions of a song before I finally upload it.

While working on my next track, “Don’t Need to Make the Mountain Move,” and getting closer to the final cut, I’ve been realizing just how much a song can change along the way.

The lyrics change. The sound changes. Sometimes a version takes the song in a completely different direction but doesn’t make the final cut.

Set It Off — The Story Behind the Song

This one is different. If you've been following Mara Navarre, you know the sound. Cinematic, anthemic, built for hard seasons. Set It Off is all of that, but rawer. Heavier. More primal.

This song came directly from something I've experienced in extreme athletic training. You're deep into a brutal workout, pushing up a steep mountain, lungs burning, legs driving into the earth, and then something shifts. The thinking brain goes quiet. Not tired quiet. Gone quiet. No internal dialogue, no fear, no pain. Just movement. Pure instinct. Your body takes the wheel and something ancient comes alive.

There's actually a term for this. Transient hypofrontality. The prefrontal cortex powers down and your brain redirects everything toward performance. Athletes call it flow state. I call it dropping the limiter. It feels like transcendence, but it's just the body working exactly the way it was designed to.

Most people never find it, which is unfortunate, because it's in all of us. It just takes time and hard work to get there. Exercise is transformative in ways that go far beyond the physical. The person who comes out the other side of consistent hard training is fundamentally different.

The Mara Navarre music has always been about moving forward, rising up, breaking through. This one is a raw, primal moment from deep inside a hard effort.

I also wrote it as a pump up song. Something to hit play on right before you have to do something hard. Whatever your mountain is.
