Balqiis breaks down the rising and newest form of Gender Based Violence (GBV) - Online Gender-Based Violence (OGBV).
There are many real-life examples of how offline abuse often spills into online platforms, and conversely how online violence can lead to real-world harm. But first we must recognise it for what it is. Online violence is real violence. It's increasingly clear that Gender-based violence isn’t limited to one space. Technology now enables intimate partner violence, domestic abuse, and even trafficking through tools like GPS tracking and spyware.
Unfortunately many do not recognize Online Gender-Based Violence and could unknowingly be perpetuating it. Most common forms are;
📷 Cyberstalking: Unwanted monitoring online
📷 Sexual Harassment: Sending explicit content without consent
📷 Doxing: Sharing private information to harm
📷 Hate Speech: Using slurs or threats based on gender or ethnicity
It’s time to take action and make digital platforms safe and inclusive. Let’s recognize the harm caused by our fingertips and work to make online spaces safer for everyone.
