One historic railway over the mountains. A new one beneath them. And Venice waiting at the end. 🚆🏔️🇮🇹

This week, join me from Vienna to Venice in Railjet Business Class, exploring around 170 years of railway engineering, from the Semmering’s stone viaducts to the new Koralm Tunnel.

There’s also breakfast and lunch in the restaurant car, Alpine scenery, a train and seat tour, and that final crossing across the Venetian Lagoon.

At 36 minutes, this is one of my longest films yet and one I’m particularly happy to share with you. 🙂

Which part would you most look forward to: the Semmering, the Koralm Tunnel, or arriving in Venice?

Two capitals, two routes! 🚆🇸🇰🇦🇹

A few months ago, I traveled from Vienna to Bratislava-Petržalka on the REX6. Several of you suggested trying the other railway connection and this week, that’s exactly what we’re doing!

Join me on the REX8 from Bratislava Central Station to Vienna via Marchegg, with an ÖBB Vectron at the head of a rather mixed train. Along the way, we explore a railway whose story stretches from the Habsburg monarchy through the Cold War to today’s electric services.

There are views, maps, a little history and, of course, a look around the train. 🙂

Which route would you choose: REX8 via Marchegg or REX6 via Kittsee?

The Øresund crossing is more than its famous bridge. My train from Malmö to Copenhagen also crosses an artificial island and enters a tunnel beneath the sea.

In my new video, I follow the journey and the engineering behind it:

🚆 NEW VIDEO!

The final chapter of my Slovakia mini-series is now live.

After a catenary failure throws the day into chaos, I reach Levice much later than originally planned. Bratislava is only 132 kilometers and one train away but R 842 Urpín is already 58 minutes late, and I still don’t know which route it will take.

Will we continue directly through Senec, or be diverted through Trnava, adding more than an hour to the journey?

One last train. One badly broken timetable.

Will I reach Bratislava tonight?

Come along!

🚆 NEW VIDEO: This Tiny Slovak Train Saved My Ruined Day

Last week’s three-hour Railjet delay left me in Nové Zámky instead of Štúrovo. My planned route to Levice was gone, the rest of my day had been turned upside down and I still had no idea how I would eventually return to Bratislava.

But one important part of the plan survived: traveling aboard Slovakia’s wonderfully basic Class 812 railcar.

This tiny two-axle train carries us 53 kilometers through rural Slovakia, calling at small stations along the way. It is noisy, bumpy and hardly luxurious but it also demonstrates why regional railways and the communities they serve still matter.

The journey takes 1 hour and 32 minutes and costs just €3.

Was this peculiar little train able to save my ruined day?

🚄 Today on Worldwide P.: three hours late.. and somehow I’m okay with it.

This Railjet departed Prague perfectly on time. By the end of the journey, it had spent 90 minutes standing still, reversed toward Bratislava, taken a route it was never supposed to use and arrived 182 minutes late.

I couldn’t even reach my planned destination, and the rest of my day in Slovakia was thrown into chaos.

So why did I leave the train impressed rather than furious?

Because this became an extraordinary example of the difference between a railway disruption and poor passenger service.

Join me aboard railjet 273 Metropolitan for breakfast, lunch, a complete First Class tour and a 536-kilometer journey that goes spectacularly off the timetable.

Would anything make you accept a three-hour delay with a smile? 👇

Hi all! 👋

I’m using these last few days of summer for a little vacation trip, so there won’t be a new video today.

But next week’s video will be a rather special one. 😄

I’ll arrive 3 hours late, at a different station from the one originally planned, my whole day and all my connections will be turned upside down...

...and somehow, I’ll be perfectly fine with it.

Can you imagine why? 👀

See you next week!

Cheers,

🚄 Today on Worldwide P., the wrong train becomes exactly the right train for the story.

I booked this journey from Frankfurt to Leipzig specifically to experience an ICE T. Instead, an unmistakable ICE 1 arrived, the original generation that launched regular ICE service in 1991.

What begins as a 524-kilometer journey with an unexpected diversion becomes something much bigger: the story of how Germany created the ICE, why it could not simply copy France’s TGV, and how the original train remains relevant 35 years later.

History, technology, new high-speed lines, German reunification, a complete train tour and, naturally, a few operational surprises along the way.

Would you have preferred the planned ICE T, or been delighted to receive the classic ICE 1? Let me know. 👇

🇮🇪 NEW VIDEO!

Is this Ireland’s best train?

Today, I’m travelling in First Class from Dublin Heuston to Cork aboard Iarnród Éireann’s route-exclusive Mark IV InterCity.

Along the way, we’ll explore historic Heuston station, examine the train and its Class 201 locomotive, look at the history of Ireland’s railways, tour First Class and investigate the wonderfully complicated Limerick Junction.

Comfortable seats, a proper trolley service and approximately two and a half hours between Ireland’s two largest cities but does the experience deserve to be called the country’s best train?

One train. No changes. Brussels to Amsterdam.

That was the plan.

Then I entered Brussels-Midi and saw one rather worrying word beside my Eurocity Direct: “LIMITED.”

The train would terminate at Breda. One direct journey became three trains, two changes, a considerable detour across the Netherlands and an arrival at Amsterdam Centraal instead of Amsterdam Zuid.

Was this reasonable disruption management, or an unacceptable way to treat passengers?
