📉 Can a portfolio benefit from falling stock prices?

Most investors understand how to make money when markets rise. But professional portfolio strategies can also take positions designed to benefit from declining prices.

This is where Long and Short Positions become relevant.

📈 LONG: A position that seeks to benefit from an increase in an asset’s price.

📉 SHORT: A position that seeks to benefit from a decline in an asset’s price.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Consider a hypothetical portfolio with:

• 70% Long Exposure
• 20% Short Exposure
• Gross Exposure: 90%
• Net Long Exposure: 50%

The distinction matters because gross exposure represents the scale of positions, while net exposure provides an indication of directional positioning.

With SEBI’s Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs), permitted long-short strategies are now part of India’s regulated investment landscape.

But there’s an important distinction.

A short position doesn’t automatically mean lower portfolio risk.

Outcomes depend on stock selection, market movements, correlations, hedging effectiveness and execution costs.

A strategy can have lower net exposure and still experience significant losses.

💡 The larger lesson is that portfolio risk cannot be understood from returns alone. Understanding how exposures are constructed is equally important.

Because two portfolios delivering similar returns may be taking very different risks.

STT collections surged 51.6% to ₹46,840 crore in FY 2026-27. But does this mean stock market trading has increased?

From April 2026, STT on futures increased 2.5x, while options premium STT rose 50%.

Is the government successfully reducing F&O speculation, or are traders simply paying higher taxes?

CA Priyanka Aggarwal breaks down the numbers and what they actually indicate.
