I was in Class 6 when some relatives made fun of my English, my clothes and my background. I studied in a Hindi-medium school, while my cousins attended English-medium ICSE schools. When I couldn’t answer questions in English, I was made to feel inferior.

And yes, I was what they called a “𝐝𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐢 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐡𝐚.” I loved wearing bright, vibrant colours and didn’t understand what people considered stylish or aesthetic. My father’s financial situation was also not strong enough to give us everything they had.
Their words hurt.

I began comparing everything my clothes, toys, home and life with what they had. For a long time, I desperately tried to fit in and earn their acceptance. Eventually, I stopped seeking their approval and started investing in myself. I worked on my English, developed confidence and continued growing. I still have room to improve, but I’m no longer ashamed of where I started. I’m not grateful for the bullying.

Cruelty is not motivation. But I am proud of how I responded to it. Other people’s words do not have to become your identity. With courage and consistent effort, you can turn pain into progress. My mom once brought home a tiny curry-leaf plant. 🌱

She kept it in a small pot and took care of it for more than 2 months. But it barely grew. Eventually, it even started dying.

She finally planted it in an open patch of soil, thinking, “It will probably die anyway. At least it will make the soil more fertile.”

But something unexpected happened.

Within a week, it grew almost 5 inches. And within a month, it had grown enough to reach our boundary wall.

Same plant. Same roots. Same potential. Different environment.

And I think careers can be like this too.

Sometimes one bad experience, one rejection, one manager’s opinion, one layoff, or one difficult phase makes us question our entire potential.

Maybe I’m not good enough.
Maybe everyone else is better than me.

But sometimes, you don't need to try harder. You need an environment where you can grow.

A plant struggling in a small pot doesn’t tell you how tall it is capable of becoming.

So don’t let one chapter make you forget your entire story.

Sometimes changing your environment isn’t running away. It’s giving yourself another chance to grow. 🌱
