If your goal is to produce large quantities of quality goat milk, choosing the right breed is one of the most important decisions you can make.
Here are some of the leading dairy goat breeds:
1. Saanen
Often regarded as one of the best breeds for high milk volume. Saanens are known for good milk yield, calm temperament, and strong dairy characteristics.
2. Alpine
Excellent milk producers with good adaptability. They can provide both good quantity and quality milk, making them popular for commercial dairy production.
3. Anglo-Nubian
Known for milk with higher butterfat and protein content. This makes the breed excellent for cheese, yoghurt, and other value-added dairy products.
4. Toggenburg
A productive dairy breed with good milk yield and consistent lactation performance.

If your priority is maximum milk volume → Saanen is an excellent choice.
If your priority is rich, high-fat milk → Anglo-Nubian is a strong choice.
If you want a balance between milk production, quality and adaptability → Alpine is worth considering.

For Nigerian farmers, don't choose a breed based on milk yield alone. Climate, feed availability, disease resistance, management, housing and adaptation to local conditions can greatly affect performance.
A well-managed cross between a high-producing exotic dairy goat and a well-adapted local goat can sometimes be a practical option for commercial production.
📌 Remember: Genetics sets the potential, but nutrition and management determine how much of that potential the goat actually expresses.
