๐Ÿ”ฅ 5 RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE RENIGADES OF HARLEM! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

During the 1970s in Spanish Harlem, Manhattan, some NYC street organizations began choosing a different path. The Renigades Of Harlem maintained their street identity while becoming involved in sweat equity, community rebuilding and the rehabilitation of abandoned buildings in El Barrio. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿ™๏ธ
Instead of continuing to rumble, members helped turn neglected buildings into livable homes. This is a side of 1970s NYC Street Organization history that deserves to be remembered. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

๐Ÿ”ฅ What happens when a New York City street organization decides to change what its name represents?

In the Nineteen Seventies, the Renigades Of Harlem were part of the street-organization culture of Spanish Harlem / El Barrio, Manhattan, NYCโ€”with their own colors, identity, divisions and neighborhood roots.
But this chapter of New York City street history took a direction many people today have never heard about. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿข
Members became involved in Sweat Equity, Community Empowerment and Community Rebuilding, working on abandoned and deteriorating properties in their neighborhood while learning construction skills and creating a different image of what an NYC street organization could become.
From street colors and territorial identityโ€ฆto hard hats, construction tools and rebuilding buildings.

But how did the transformation happenโ€”and what did the Renigades actually accomplish?
๐Ÿ‘€ WATCH THIS VIDEO FROM START TO FINISH. The photographs, original colors, membership history and rehabilitation project tell a side of 1970s NYC Street Organizations history that deserves to be remembered.
๐Ÿ’ฌ After watching, tell me in the comments:
Do you think stories like this change the way NYC Street Gangs and Youth Gangs from that era should be remembered?

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท RARE 1972 NEWSPAPER HISTORY FROM PATERSON, NEW JERSEY! โœŠ๐Ÿฟ

This photograph captures members of the Paterson, N.J. Division of the Ghetto Brothers, the legendary street organization originally founded in the Bronx, New York during the late 1960s.

๐Ÿ”ฅ And hereโ€™s a piece of history many people may not know: the late salsa singer Frankie Ruiz was a member of this Paterson division of the Ghetto Brothers. May he Rest In Peace. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

Look closely at this photographโ€”the members are out in the neighborhood cleaning the streets. The Ghetto Brothers became known not only for their street presence, but also for looking after communities where their divisions were established.

From The Bronx, N.Y. to Paterson, N.J., Ghetto Brothers power was in full effect outside New York City during the 1970s.

And this history went even further. New York City street organizations expanded into New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and beyond. There was even a Massachusetts Ghetto Brothers division during the early 1970s. Iโ€™ll be sharing a newspaper article mentioning them in a future postโ€”STAY TUNED. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป RIP Frankie Ruiz, Karate Charlie, Yellow Benjy & Black Bengie.

๐Ÿ”ฅ RARE NEW YORK CITY STREET HISTORY! This late-1970s newspaper photograph captures members of the Screaming Phantoms in Bushwick, Brooklyn, N.Y. โ€” a Brooklyn street organization originally out of Williamsburg.

The Screaming Phantoms were a mixed street organization with other divisions documented in the Bronx and Queens. Their colors were yellow and red โ€” and vice versa. Some members also wore Puerto Rican ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท and Pan-African โœŠ๐Ÿฟ flag patches on their vests. You can find examples by searching through my older posts and videos.

๐Ÿ“ฐ In 1973, the Screaming Phantoms were involved in an altercation in Bushwick with another Brooklyn street organization, the Devils Rebels, which was reported in the newspapers.

๐Ÿ‘€ DO YOU REMEMBER THE SCREAMING PHANTOMS?

๐Ÿ”ฅ RARE 1970s NYC STREET HISTORY! This incredible photograph captures a member of the Spanish Kings โ€” Manhattan Division during the 1970s. But look closely at that vestโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

The Spanish Kings were originally founded in the late 1960s in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y. During the 1970s, they expanded into Manhattan, including the Lower East Side and El Barrio / East Harlem.

Their colors also varied by area: orange & white in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, while members in El Barrio wore red & white.

๐Ÿ”ฅ NOW CHECK OUT THAT VEST!

Fur collars were often added to the tops of NYC street-organization vests during the 1970sโ€”but this member took it in a different direction, adding fur trim down both sides of the back of his vest. That is one of the details that makes this photograph stand out.

Other Spanish Kings divisions in El Barrio included the Baby Kings and others.

And yesโ€”Manhattan had street organizations throughout the 1970s. New York's history of street groups stretches all the way back into the 1800s, generations before the era most people associate with NYC street gangs.

๐Ÿ—ฝ DO YOU REMEMBER THE SPANISH KINGS?
Were they active in your part of Manhattan or Brooklyn? Do you remember their members, divisions, colors, clubhouses, or neighborhoods?

๐Ÿ”ฅ RARE BRONX STREET HISTORY โ€” THE SAVAGE SKULLS IN THE 1970s!

This rare photograph captures members of the legendary Bronx, N.Y. street organization the SAVAGE SKULLS during the 1970s โ€” an organization whose history stretches back to the late 1960s.

The Savage Skulls formed in 1966 and became official in 1969. Now, 57 years after 1969, the organization still exists in 2026 under the same Savage Skulls identity.

๐Ÿ‘€ LOOK CLOSELY AT THE COLORS.

One member is wearing a Dixie flag patch. In the context of some 1970s NYC street organizations, this imagery was used by certain members as a symbol of outlaw rebellion and shock value. Meanings could vary by wearer and setting, making photographs like this important pieces of the larger historical record.

๐ŸŒŽ Across approximately 25 divisions throughout NYC and beyond, Savage Skulls membership included people from different backgrounds โ€” part of a much larger and more diverse history than many people realize.

๐Ÿ“ธ Over the decades, the Savage Skulls have appeared in documentaries, newspaper articles, historical photographs and other records documenting New York City's street-organization era.

๐Ÿซก SALUTE TO SUPREME PRESIDENT โ€œBLACKIEโ€ โ€” one of the surviving Supreme Presidents connected to that 1970s era and still here in 2026.

๐Ÿ”ฅ RARE NYC STREET HISTORY โ€” WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN! ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This rare late 1970sโ€“early 1980s photograph features Musa โ€” R.I.P., a member of the legendary Dirty Ones of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Dirty Ones were originally founded in 1968 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by โ€œCheโ€ and others, later expanding into other parts of Brooklyn โ€” including Sunset Park in 1974 โ€” and into Manhattan.

What many people today may not realize is that the Dirty Ones began as a New York City street organization before eventually evolving into the nationally established Dirty Ones M.C., with charters across the United States.

๐Ÿ๏ธ For some old-school NYC street organizations, the transition into motorcycle clubs became part of their evolution. Others remained street organizations.

๐Ÿคฏ BEFORE HIP HOP FASHIONโ€ฆ NYC STREET ORGANIZATIONS WERE ALREADY WEARING THEIR IDENTITIES ON THEIR BACKS.

From the late Nineteen Sixties through the Nineteen Seventies and Nineteen Eighties, NYC Street Organizations developed some of the most recognizable vests, colors, rockers, center emblems and patches ever seen on the streets of New York City.

But where did that style come from?

Why did so many organizations use sleeveless denim and leather?

Why were names placed above and below giant center emblems?

And why could two members from the SAME organization sometimes have colors that looked completely different?

In this Classic NY Street Gangs historical video, we take a closer look at NYC Street Organizations Vests, NYC Street Organizations Colors and NYC Street Organizations Patches across The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.

Youโ€™ll see how these jackets became visual identities representing organizations, divisions, neighborhoods, boroughs, cultural pride and individual members โ€” while discovering some of the outside influences that helped shape their unmistakable New York style.

๐Ÿ’ฏ The history includes or connects to organizations such as:

Savage Skulls โ€ข Black Spades โ€ข Ghetto Brothers โ€ข Seven Immortals โ€ข Ministers Bronx โ€ข Devils Rebels โ€ข Roman Kings โ€ข Katos Nunchacus โ€ข Young Katos โ€ข Young Dynamite โ€ข Dynamite Brothers โ€ข Puerto Rican Brothers โ€ข Homicide Inc โ€ข The Assassinators โ€ข Dirty Ones โ€ข Masters Of Disaster โ€ข Reapers Bronx โ€ข Aliens MC New York โ€ข Young Sinners โ€ข Royal Swords โ€ข Screaming Phantoms โ€ข Deadly Bachelors โ€ข TNT Bachelors โ€ข Royal Bachelors โ€ข Seven Crowns โ€ข Savage Nomads โ€ข Savage Samurais โ€ข Javelins Gestapo and many more.

We also revisit the importance of Hoe Avenue and the period when several New York street organizations could be photographed together wearing completely different colors, symbols and identities.

Were NYC Gang Vests directly influenced by motorcycle-club cuts?

How much came from neighborhood creativity?

Why did Puerto Rican, Black and other cultural symbols appear alongside organization colors?

And what happened to this style as NYC entered the Hip Hop era?

WATCH UNTIL THE END.

Some of the smallest details on these surviving photographs tell one of the biggest stories about NYC street culture.

๐Ÿ’ฌ COMMENT: Which NYC street organization had the most unforgettable vest, colors or center patch?

๐Ÿ”ฅ THE RECEIPTS ARE RIGHT HERE โ€” AND THIS RARE 1970s NYC NEWSPAPER PHOTO TELLS THE STORY.

This photograph features Afro-American members of the Jamaica, Queens Division of the Bronx-born Savage Skulls during the 1970s.

A lot of people associate the Savage Skulls almost exclusively with ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ท Puerto Rican membership in the Bronx โ€” but New York City was, and remains, a melting pot. As these street organizations expanded beyond their original neighborhoods, their membership could become much more diverse.

โœŠ๐Ÿฟ JAMAICA, QUEENS was one of those chapters. This newspaper photograph documents Black members wearing the SAVAGE SKULLS colors right in a Jamaica housing project. The newspaper caption identifies members of the organization speaking with two officers from the NYPDโ€™s 103rd Precinct community-affairs program.

The Savage Skulls also had a presence in Far Rockaway, Queens during the 1970s. Their wider expansion reportedly reached numerous divisions throughout NYC โ€” including Staten Island โ€” as well as nearby states, with divisions documented as far away as Michigan in 1973 and Miami, Florida in 1975.

And Jamaica, Queens itself was packed with street-organization history. The area also included organizations and divisions connected with the Savage Nomads, Seven Crowns, Seven Immortals and others.

๐Ÿ—ฝ NYC STREET HISTORY IS ALWAYS DEEPER THAN THE STORIES PEOPLE KEEP REPEATING.

๐Ÿ‘€ Watch this Short from beginning to end, study the photograph and read the original newspaper caption.
