Russia Condemns Austria’s Decision to Block Iran’s Nuclear Chief from IAEA Conference!

Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, has strongly criticized Austria’s decision to prevent Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), from attending the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

According to Ulyanov, Austria initially granted Eslami a visa but later revoked it. Iranian accounts say the cancellation followed U.S. pressure connected to disputes over the claimed reimposition of UN sanctions. Eslami had already departed for Vienna but returned to Tehran after the cancellation.

Ulyanov argued that Austria’s action violated its obligations as host of the IAEA and rejected claims by the UK, France and Germany regarding the “snapback” sanctions mechanism as legally invalid. He also maintained that the relevant provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 ceased to operate on October 18, 2025.

The Russian envoy warned that using visas as a political pressure tool could further complicate already strained relations between Iran and the IAEA, particularly at a time when dialogue over Iran’s nuclear program remains critical.

He called for an end to what he described as “visa arbitrariness,” arguing that the IAEA conference should instead provide an opportunity to rebuild communication between Tehran and the nuclear watchdog.
