In my opinion, Jellystone did a great job at giving us more female representation in the HB universe. So I wanted to do the same for my vision of a Huckleberry Hound reboot, hence why I included Cindy Bear despite first appearing on The Yogi Bear Show. But there was one character that I absolutely wanted to see return. And that's Huckleberry Hound's wife, Desert Flower from "The Good, The Bad, and Huckleberry Hound".
However I felt she needed an overhaul. I wanted to give her an attire that compliments Huck's standard look while still retaining her Native American heritage. I gave her a fringe jacket and a bandana. The first sketch I did on a tiny sticky note had her with a flower clip and hair tuft (inspired by Teen Huck from Yo Yogi). The purple and green color scheme works so well in the original, so I kept her color scheme. It works because the use of secondary colors for Desert compliments Huck's primary color scheme. I even made a small chart comparing the color scheme of each Huck Hound character to make sure each color scheme is unique to each character.
Since my vision for a reboot is a modern take on The Huckleberry Hound Show, Desert Flower's role varies depending on the episode, but she would mainly be portrayed as Huckleberry Hound's girlfriend/love interest instead of his wife. I would love to see how she'd pair up with Cindy, Hokey, or Powerful Pierre.
I want to know your thoughts and suggestions on this design. What works and what doesn't? Is this design good enough?
Here's my take on Ranger Roubideux. He's a fairly obscure character in the HB universe, but he was Ranger Smith's partner in The New Yogi Bear Show and even had a minor role in Yogi and the Invasion of the Space Bears. Thought it would be nice to draw him as a way to pay tribute to his voice actor Peter Cullen, who sadly passed away last month.
I remember cracking up when I saw Roubideux for the first time, since he literally looked like a squished up Ranger Smith. But I think he does look a lot more unique when paired with the classic Ranger Smith from Huckleberry Hound and The Yogi Bear Show, although I might give Roubideux some darker brown hair just for good measure.
I do quite love the idea of Ranger Smith having his own little Boo Boo just like Yogi does, and it's a shame that Roubideux never caught on.
P.S. I also improved my design for Powerful Pierre, so here's a sketch I made of him just now.
To follow up a post I made three days ago, here's some examples of Huck wearing his boater hat in the original Huckleberry Hound show. He wore it fairly often despite only wearing it once in his cartoons, unless you count the title cards.
I've got confirmation from Warner Archive that the Blu-ray release of Quick Draw McGraw is being delayed. It will now be releasing on October 20 alongside the Blu-ray release of Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. In the meantime, you can catch the premiere of Quick Draw McGraw's first episode on MeTV Toons next week.
A 35mm print of The Simpsons: Family Therapy (1989) that was posted yesterday. I spent last night color correcting the footage to closely match the typical look of The Simpsons, as well as cropping the footage to closely match how the short was originally presented on The Tracey Ullman Show. It's now available to watch on this channel along with another video comparing the original unrestored 35mm to my color correcting attempt. Both videos are also available on Internet Archive, so it can be preserved for many generations to come.
Fun Fact: Not counting the theme song, title cards, and interstitial bumpers, "Little Red Riding Huck" is the only Huckleberry Hound cartoon segment to depict Huck in his iconic crooked boater hat. All future segments that featured Huck's standard design would either have him wear a different hat or no hat.
