I AM JANE DOE.

Not because I am claiming to be the woman whose story has been brought into the public eye, but because her name should never have become something for strangers to hunt for, dissect, debate, or use against her. “Jane Doe” is more than a placeholder. She is a person. She is someone who deserves privacy, dignity, safety, and the right to decide for herself how much of her story the world gets to know.

I AM JANE DOE because I stand beside survivors who have been made to feel ashamed of what was done to them. I stand beside the people who were afraid to speak because they knew they might be questioned, mocked, blamed, or treated as though their trauma were public property. I stand beside the people who never received justice, the people who were never believed, and the people who had to carry something painful while the rest of the world continued as if nothing had happened.

Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. It does not matter what someone was wearing, how much they had to drink, where they went, who they were with, whether they knew the person, whether they froze, whether they fought back, or how long it took them to speak about it afterward. None of those things create consent. None of them make someone responsible for being harmed.

And no survivor owes the public a perfect story. They do not owe strangers every detail. They do not owe us their name. They do not owe us their face. They do not owe us proof of their pain.

We should not be trying to uncover who Jane Doe is. We should be asking why a survivor ever had to be afraid of being identified in the first place. We should be asking why victims are so often forced to defend themselves while the circumstances surrounding their assault become entertainment for strangers online.

So when I say I AM JANE DOE, I am not erasing her identity. I am protecting it.

I am saying that she is not alone.

I am saying that her story belongs to her.

I am saying that her privacy matters.

I am saying that survivors deserve compassion before judgment, support before suspicion, and justice without having to sacrifice their dignity to receive it.

She is not a headline.
She is not a rumor.
She is not a name for us to uncover.

She is a human being.

I AM JANE DOE. And I will not let her stand alone.

For some context today I was walking back from band class when I said goodbye to my friend himiko they said : “Bye Ash!” Ash is my deadname but I didn’t have a problem with them calling me that since they have memory issues and struggle to adjust to change, my friend Eli beside me said “So let her call you Ash and not me?” I explained why I let her and he said “oh ok, bye ‘ASH’” I got mad at him for deadnaming me and cut ties with him right there.
