💧 How to Check Your Town’s Drinking Water (Massachusetts Residents)

Massachusetts posts public water test results online for free. Here’s how to look up your town in 3 simple steps:

1️⃣ Go to the state’s drinking water data search:
eeaonline.eea.state.ma.us/Portal/#!/search/drinkin…

2️⃣ Choose your town.

3️⃣ Set a date range (for example, the last 12 months) and search.

📊 Reading the results: Compare the “Result” to the “Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL).” If the result is well below the MCL, that’s a good sign. You can also search by a specific contaminant, like nitrate or PFAS.

📜 Are the standards getting easier? No, they’re getting stricter.
• PFAS: In 2016, the federal guideline was 70 ppt and couldn’t be enforced. Massachusetts set an enforceable 20 ppt limit in 2020, ahead of most of the country. In 2024, EPA set national limits of 4 ppt each for PFOA and PFOS.
• Lead: The action level has been 15 ppb since 1991. It drops to 10 ppb in November 2027.
• Nitrate: The 10 ppm limit, which protects infants, has held steady for decades.
Passing today means meeting tougher standards than ten years ago.

💡 Good to know: Bacteria and lead/copper results aren’t in this search. For the full picture, check your town’s Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, usually posted on the town website each summer. Lead most often comes from home plumbing, so your town water department can tell you about testing your own tap.

💧 Westborough Water Quality – What the Latest Report Says

The Town of Westborough has published its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report. Here’s a quick summary in plain language. (I’m a resident sharing this, not the Water Department. Read the full report at the link below.)

✅ Met all health-based limits in 2025
• PFAS (“forever chemicals”): averaged 12 ppt, highest 15. The Massachusetts limit is 20.
• Lead: 0 of 34 homes tested were above the action level.
• Nitrate: highest 1.5 ppm. The limit is 10.
• Arsenic: 8 ppb. The limit is 10. Below the standard, but the report notes low levels are present.

⚠️ Worth knowing
• On Nov. 20, 2025, disinfection at the Fisher St. plant dropped below required levels for about 72 minutes. The town says it was fixed the same day and was not an emergency.
• In Aug. 2025, some required water samples weren’t collected or reported. This was a paperwork violation, not unsafe water.
• Manganese (a natural mineral) reached as high as 690 ppb at times. Parents of infants may want to ask the Water Dept. about levels where they live.

🏠 Tips
• Lead usually comes from home plumbing, not the treatment plant. Use cold water for drinking, cooking and baby formula, and run the tap a bit if water has been sitting.
