Poetry is made of murder, honey, and one bad decision at altitude.

Two dwarves killed the wisest being alive, drained his blood, mixed it with honey and brewed a mead that turned anyone who drank it into a poet. It passed through a giant's hands into a mountain, guarded by his daughter. Odin got in, drank all three vats, turned into an eagle and flew.

The giant chased him as an eagle too. Odin, pressed, lost some of the mead in flight, and it fell over the wall of Ásgarðr, out into the world, where anyone could reach it.

The Norse had a name for that spillage: skálda hlutr, the poetasters' share. Every bad poem ever written comes from it.

So: did you drink from the vats, or the spill? 🍯

Literally "the one who follows." Every person had one - a spirit that walked with them their whole life, unseen. It usually took the shape of an animal that matched what you actually were, not what you claimed to be. Bear, wolf, ox, hare.

You almost never saw your own. If you did, it meant you were about to die.

And it didn't die with you. Like the family itself, it moved on to whoever came next.

Frigg knows how everything ends. She has never told anyone.

In Lokasenna, Odin says it outright: she knows all fates, though she speaks of none. She knew Baldr would die. She knew Odin would be swallowed. She rode out and made fire, water, iron, stone, beasts and sickness swear an oath not to harm her son, and skipped one plant, because it seemed too young to matter.

That's the part that lands. The wisest being in the nine worlds knew the ending, tried anyway, and lost by a single overlooked detail.

Every scrap of leather you have ever thrown away went into a single shoe.

Víðarr is the silent god. He says nothing in any surviving myth. But the Norse believed that every time a man trimmed the waste from a shoe at the toe and heel and threw it aside, that scrap travelled to Víðarr, and had been doing so since the beginning of the world.

At Ragnarök the wolf swallows Odin. Víðarr steps forward, puts that shoe down on Fenrir's lower jaw, and tears the wolf apart with his hands. One kick. Built from every discarded shoe in human history.

Then he walks out of the end of the world alive.

A drengr was a man you could build something on. Keeps his word when it costs him. Doesn't strike a man who can't strike back. Doesn't lie, even to enemies. Drengskapr is that conduct, and the sagas hand it out to enemies as freely as to friends, because it was never about which side you were on.

Not honour as glory. Honour as reliability.

It never died, either, an Icelander still swears a formal oath on his drengskapr today.

Sól rides ahead of a wolf named Sköll, who has chased her since the world began and will finally catch her at Ragnarök. Her brother Máni runs from Hati. Every sunrise you have ever seen is a chase in progress.

And here is the part nobody tells you: Sól has a daughter. When the wolf takes her mother, the daughter takes the road.

The Norse didn't believe the light wins. They believed it gets replaced. ☀️🐺
