Frederick Soh has been in Next-Level Tableau since the very beginning.

This week he got a #VOTD.

KPI design is one of the topics I come back to again and again in NLT classes. It sounds simple, yet getting it right is harder than people expect.

Fred's been putting in the reps since day one. This is the result.

Congrats Fred. πŸ‘

What’s one KPI design choice from his viz you could use for your KPIs? public.tableau.com/app/profile/frederick2489/viz/K…

You pick "West" in your region filter. Your dashboard title still says "Sales Dashboard."

Here's the fix:

1. On your filter, choose Apply to Worksheets β†’ Using This Data Source.
2. Create a new sheet. Drag Region to Detail. Size to zero, opacity to zero.
3. Double-click the title. Insert the Region field.
4. Drag the sheet to the top of your dashboard. Fit Entire View. Remove the original title.
5. On the filter options, choose Customise and uncheck Show All.

Now your title updates when the filter changes.

Tableau dashboards fall apart in the container layer.

You add one more sheet. Then another. Then you're nesting containers inside containers, fighting padding, and praying nothing shifts when someone clicks.

Dynamic Zone Visibility fixes that.

We built this map drill down in @Next-Level Tableau earlier this month using a single dashboard and one parameter toggle. Click a region, the detail view appears. Click away, it disappears. No stacked sheets or container wrestling.

Here's the back solve:

1. Build your map and detail views as separate sheets
2. Create a parameter to control which zone is visible
3. Write a boolean calculation. True shows the container, false hides it.
4. Put the detail view in a container and connect it to the calculation
5. Add a parameter action on the map to trigger the switch

10 signs of a really good dashboard. What did I miss?

1. Helps users to make informed decisions quickly
2. Most critical information is the most prominent
3. Color is used sparingly for highlighting
4. Uses the right chart for the right data
5. Avoids unnecessary complexity
6. Includes drill down capabilities
7. Highlights actionable insights
8. Charts are grouped logically
9. Charts match user priorities
10. Uses space effectively

The focus of (almost) any dashboard is to make data easy to understand.

@Blake Feiza just became a 2026 Tableau Ambassador. Here's the playbook he used to get there.

1. Weekly public practice. One Makeover Monday per week, blogging what he learned.
2. Community building. Co-founded the Retail Tableau User Group, built his reputation, spoke at TC25.
3. Profile alignment. Organised his Tableau Public profile to showcase his best work.
4. Kept showing up. Consistently, publicly, over time.
5. Learned inside a supportive community (he did this through @Next-Level Tableau).

The result? A promotion, an offer from Apple, and now a Tableau Ambassador.

"Publishing in public beats studying in private."

You can build a career like Blake's. Which of these will you start now?

The reason your LOD is slow might be that you didn't need an LOD at all.

Here's the rule I use: if all the dimensions you need are already in the view, start with a table calculation. If you need to calculate at a different level of granularity than what's in the view, that's when you reach for an LOD.

LODs send an extra query to your data source. Table calculations run on data Tableau has already pulled. On a big data set with multiple LODs, you'll feel that difference.

Hiring managers don't hire potential. They hire proof. Here's how two NLT members built theirs.

β†’ The first consultant

He joined with around 20 Tableau Public visualizations. I push everyone to post what we build in class. A year later he had 200. In an interview he stopped the questions: "Can I just show you my Tableau Public profile?" No-brainer hire.

β†’ The second member

He paid out of pocket when his company wouldn't support it. Showed up to every live class and took what he learned straight into his own data the same day. Promoted within weeks. He's now speaking at Tableau Conference.

Neither of them waited until they felt ready. They just kept building in public, and the opportunities followed.

That great dashboard you just created? It's not going to get you promoted.

The business impact behind it just might.

Four questions to turn your dashboard into a career story:

What was broken before you built it?
What changed after?
What's the number β€” hours saved, errors reduced, time to decision?
What's the 60-second story?
