Nearly 50 years on the water, and Rick Pollock has the photos to prove it 📸
Swipe through: kingfish over 40kg, a 50kg monster that took three anglers to subdue, a 241kg blue marlin, a big bluefin tuna, giant mahimahi, his charter boat Pursuit, and the 52kg White Island kingfish that tied the All Tackle world record.
Rick grew up in Hollywood, the son of a doctor, and had boated 100 billfish out of Baja by the time he was 18. In 1978 he came to New Zealand on a one-year contract skippering a charter boat out of Whakatane, fishing White Island. He never left. Today he’s one of the country’s most respected charter skippers, and White Island is still his home away from home.

From lakes in France to game fish off the West Coast — this is Matt Ringot's story. 🇫🇷🎣
Matt grew up fishing with his grandparents in France, landed in New Zealand ten years ago, and fell hard for saltwater. It started in an old boat in Wellington Harbour, then a kayak that nearly got the better of him twice — until he decided a jetski was the only way forward.
Since then it's been solo missions chasing snapper, kingfish, and now game fish, all from a ski. A personal best kingfish that tested him. A 90-minute solo battle with a 100kg bluefin tuna that turned into a tug-of-war with a 2.5m shark trying to steal it off his gaff.

Helen Horrocks didn't grow up dreaming of game fishing records. She grew up fishing with her dad from a young age, scavenging tangled line off riverbanks in Scotland.
Fast forward, and she's sailed her way into New Zealand's game fishing scene from the Bay of Islands. For one unforgettable fight, she rigged her own yacht just to make it possible — these days she chases marlin, bluefin and swordfish alongside her partner Karl on most of the big game trips.
She holds a ratified NZ women's record for broadbill swordfish (279.3kg, on 37kg line class) after a 7-hour stand-up fight, and a run of tournament results to go with it — heaviest fish on debut at one of the oldest tournaments in the country, a 120kg marlin fought from a dead boat, and more.
Off the water, she runs She's Got Game — a coaching business built to give women real, hands-on experience skippering and fishing, not just theory. Her philosophy: stop waiting for an invite, buy the boat yourself.

Andre Kassal cut his teeth on zander and pike back in Germany, before New Zealand's shallow-water snapper game pulled him in for good. Fifteen years on, he's landed three snapper over 85cm — including a 30-pound personal best caught on the exact day marking ten years since he moved here — plus a knack for finding kingfish sitting on channel markers hundreds of boats cruise past without a second look.
Credit where it's due though — his wife Kie is no bystander. It was her idea to buy the 4.5m boat that's landed all of it, and her own personal best — an 85cm snapper, landed solo in risky conditions near the rocks — held the boat record for years.
