Expert level advice I follow before I Invest:
Before buying a stock, try to prove yourself wrong. Most investors research a company looking for reasons to buy it.

I prefer to ask:

- What could make my thesis wrong?
- What could permanently damage its margins?
- What if revenue growth slows?
- What if management allocates capital badly?
- What assumption am I relying on that might not hold?

And the most important question:

- What would make me sell?

If you cannot answer that before buying, you may be falling in love with the investment rather than analyzing it. Good research isn't about finding evidence that confirms your opinion. It's about finding the evidence that could destroy your opinion.

The goal isn't to be right about every investment. The goal is to avoid being confidently wrong.

ARN Bhai, plot lene se pehle 6 mahine research ki thi mein ny. A client told me during our discussion on his investment portfolio diversification.

He told me very proudly that he had visited the society four times. Checked the development plans, spoke to people already living there, compared to three different locations, negotiated the price, He even had the documents checked.

Then I asked him about the stock he'd recently bought: “Why this company?”
He said: Yaar, dost ne bataya tha. Bohat upar jayega. Tou mein ny invest kr dia

So, I asked: How long did you research it?
“Bas… dekha tha thora.”

That conversation stayed with me. We will spend months deciding where to put Rs10 million into a piece of land.

Then put Rs10 million into a business after hearing a five-minute story. And some people blame the market if the price goes down to Rs90 lac for some months.

Why do we investigate the land more than the business?

Because when people buy property, they tend to believe they are buying an asset. But when they buy a stock they think of it as ‘buying a price and not an asset.’

A share is ownership in a real business. Treat it like one.

PSX itself advises investors to study company financials, risks and business details rather than investing based on rumours or what others are buying.
The same due diligence you demand before buying a plot should apply before buying a company.

“Yaar, I can't sell now. I'm already down 45%.” A friend told me this about an investment he'd been holding for years.
I asked him one question: If you had the money in cash today, would you buy this company again?

He thought about it.
“No.”

Then why are you still holding it? He didn't have an answer.

And that's when I realized something. He wasn't holding the stock because he believed it was a good investment. He was holding it because selling would force him to admit that the original decision was wrong. But the market doesn't care about that decision.

I found this thinking, is such a common practice among investors in Pakistan.
The Rs100 he invested three years ago is important but what matters more today is what the remaining Rs55 can do.

Maybe another business can turn that Rs55 into Rs100.

Maybe this one can.

“I don't want to book the loss” isn't an investment thesis. Sometimes fellow investors focus so much on the money we've already lost that they forget to ask what our remaining money could become.

A bad investment doesn't only cost you money. Sometimes it costs you the opportunity to put that money somewhere better. So, know your investment businesses like you own them.

“Stocks settle above 170,000 on renewed buying.”

I find headlines like this interesting. A few days ago, we were reading headlines about panic selling. Today, we are reading about renewed buying.

The market changed its mood.

Did the business operations or value also change with panicky headlines?

This is why I have never believed that investors should build their conviction around the daily mood of the market. When prices fall, fear tells you everything is broken. When prices recover, optimism tells you everything is fine.

Neither is necessarily true.

Your job as an investor is not to match the market's mood. Your job is to understand the business well enough to know when the market's mood is wrong.

They say: “Protect your investments with diversification” but your portfolio isn't diversified just because you own 15 stocks.
You can own 15 companies and still have one underlying bet, the same economic cycle, the same policy or 15 businesses whose earnings move with the same commodity.

That's 15 tickers, not necessarily 15 diversified stocks.

For real diversification, as an investor, you shouldn’t be counting companies. You should focus on understanding what can cause your investments to lose money, and whether those risks are actually independent.

Count your risks, not just your stocks.
