Warner Bros. is currently on a spree of claiming and demonetizing any video I've made containing a clip of one of their films, many of them years after they've been released. Not only do these video legally fall under Fair Use according to U.S. law, from a practical perspective they're just shooting themselves in the foot! These videos basically free promotion, the kind they pay influencers to pump out on Instagram and TikTok.

I don't like to come on here and complain, but I often get emails from aspiring video essayists asking how I deal with copyright claims, and the answer is, like everybody else! I operate within what I believe to be the legal boundaries afforded by Fair Use in the US, creating content that comments on, transforms, uses only as much of the original as necessary and does not harm the market for the original in any way, but despite that, after a decade of having a solid track record on YouTube, I can still wake up to find 10 of my video demonetized overnight, no longer generating the revenue I use to pay rent.

A lot of this is just one of the hazards of this job, and I've learned to deal with it, but fighting this stuff makes it hard to make a consistent living making these kinds of videos on YouTube, and if they've meant something to you, or you want to support their continued creation, supporting my Patreon or signing up for Nebula the best ways to help me continue doing this work.

Sometimes people ask me in comments or DMs how they can learn to do film analysis. The answer is: don't study film analysis. Instead study filmmaking, art, and media theory. Watching movies is good, but it won't give you a complete understanding. A lot of what I know comes from practical experience in film and video production, but the other best way to learn about filmmaking is by reading books.
