Des Plaines Police responded to the Rivers Casino in the 3000 Block of S Des Plaines River Road for the report of a theft. Dispatch relayed that there was an altercation inside the casino between a female and a male. While security attempted to separate the parties, the female subject/Kirlilah Ebony Calhoun, aka Kelly was leaving in a white Range Rover northbound on Des Plaines River Road. When the officers arrived, they spoke with the victim and a witness who advised that Calhoun took an unconfirmed sum of money off of the victim’s person. The victim contacted security and while security was attempted to detain Calhoun, she fled the property.
A description was given out to other responding officers who located a vehicle matching that description in the 1200 Block of S Des Plaines River Road. A further note was given to responding driver’s that the driver, Calhoun, might be intoxicated. An officer, who was traveling southbound, observed the White Range Rover approaching him at a high rate of speed while he had his front mounted radar unit activated. The traveling speed of the Range Rover was locked in at 58 MPH in a posted 35 MPH speed zone. The officer performed a legal
U-turn and pulled behind the Range Rover when it was additionally observed crossing over
the center line into oncoming southbound traffic. The officer activated his emergency lights
and effectively stopped the vehicle at Des Plaines River Road and Miner Street. Upon approach, the officer located Lilah Calhoun in the driver’s seat of the vehicle and observed that she had watery/bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol was emitting from inside the vehicle. Calhoun admitted to being involved in an incident and that she had consumed alcohol prior
to driving. Calhoun stated that she was accused of “stealing” from an unknown male at the casino but that she did not do it. While the officer requested Calhoun’s driver’s license he noticed that she appeared disorganized and had difficulty locating the item. Calhoun was then asked to step out of the vehicle and perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, to which she initially consented but then recanted and sat back down in the driver’s seat. After again being asked about the incident at the casino, Calhoun started shouting at officers and being uncooperative however, provided consent to search the vehicle. This resulted in the officers finding USC in the center console cup holder in plain view. Calhoun’s information was run through the database after which dispatch notified that Calhoun had an active warrant out of
the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
During this time, the victim positively identified Calhoun as the subject that took his money through a show up and Calhoun was taken into custody and transported to the Des Plaines Police station. Once at the station, Calhoun was asked a second time to perform SFT’s and after agreeing, again recanted and refused to complete them in order to determine her intoxication level. Also at the station, a search of Calhoun’s person resulted in finding a large sum of money where she had been concealing a bulge from the officers on the traffic stop. A further review
of the surveillance cameras inside the casino showed Calhoun in close proximity to the victim and using her right hand, removes the unknown amount of money from his pocket before placing it into her back jeans pocket. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office was contacted who approved felony charges for the incident. Calhoun was subsequently arrested for Theft, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and the Warrant while also receiving citations for Speeding 21-25 MPH Over the Posted Speed Limit and Improper Traffic Lane Usage.
