Sergio Gomez - Art, Business & Marketing

When people ask me how I became an artist, I always say the same thing. It started on a bench in a church in Mexico City.

My dad was a pastor. To keep me quiet during his services, my mom would hand me an index card and a pen.

I drew the preacher. I drew the pianist. I drew everyone I saw.

After church, my aunt Elvira collected the cards from me.

She’d walk me across the street and buy me a treat from the ice cream cart man. My reward for drawing.

She was my first collector. She just paid me in ice cream instead of $$.

I’m still that same kid with a card in his hand. The cards just became paintings and I no longer take ice cream as payment 😂. But you can try 😝.

If my work moves you the way it moved my aunt, I’d love for you to see it. Visit my studio website through the link in my profile.

I came across this in the social media news this week. Instagram rolled out a feature that lets you add posts you are tagged in directly onto your own profile grid.

Think about what that means. Every time a gallery, a collector, a magazine, or a fellow artist tags you in a post about your work, that moment used to live on their page and disappear from yours. Now you can pull it onto your grid, next to your own posts.

Here is why that is worth your time today. Visibility compounds. When someone lands on your profile, they are not just looking at your art. They are looking for proof that other people already believe in it. A studio visit from a curator, a mention from a gallery, a repost from a collector, these are trust signals. Stacking them on your own grid does the convincing for you before you say a single word.

Here is a simple way to use it. One, go back through the last year and find every post you were tagged in that you are proud of. Two, add the ones that actually represent your work well. Three, keep doing this going forward instead of letting it pile up.

Have you tried this feature yet? Let me know what you think. And if this is useful, save it so you remember to go do this later today.

I spent some time this week going through the fall market reports, the way I usually do this time of year. One line stuck with me, so I wanted to share it with you.

The fall art market just opened in New York, and the reports are mixed. Some collectors feel energized. Some feel burned. Depends who you ask apparently.

I want you to hear that clearly. The market is split right now. Not falling apart. Not booming. Split. That is a very different thing than what most artists tell themselves when sales feel slow.

Here is what I coach artists to do when the headlines are mixed like this.

1️⃣ Keep your pricing consistent. Do not drop your prices because one week feels quiet, and do not inflate them because you saw one big sale somewhere. Consistency is what collectors trust.

2️⃣ Keep your work honest. Make what you actually believe in, not what you think the market wants this month. Trend chasing shows, and it rarely sells anyway.

3️⃣ Keep your relationships warm. Follow up. Say thank you. Check in on a collector even when you are not selling them anything. Relationships outlast market cycles.

The market will always swing. Energized one season, cautious the next. Your foundation does not have to swing with it.

What are your thoughts on this???

For 10 years I've run the Small Works Art Sales Challenge. Thousands of artists have taken it. This year, the timing is in your favor. The economy is pushing people back toward things that feel personal and handmade. Small works are exactly that. This is the moment to show up.

Most artists don't struggle to make good work. They struggle to know what to do with it once it's made. Second-guessing what it's worth. Marketing alone with no one to ask. Watching the holidays go by without a real plan to sell.

You shouldn't have to figure this out by yourself.

For 10 years I've run the Small Works Art Sales Challenge. Thousands of artists have taken it. This year, the timing is in your favor. The economy is pushing people back toward things that feel personal and handmade. Small works are exactly that. This is the moment to show up.

Here's the plan, in 3 simple steps:

1. Sign up for the challenge
2. Get the weekly coaching, resources, and community support
3. Start selling your art with a real plan behind it

Inside, you'll get 10 weeks of sessions covering art, audience, attention, offer, and sales, plus the mindset work to actually use it. Weekly Q&A. A community of artists doing this alongside you. My AI marketing tools. And a chance to submit your portfolio to 33 Contemporary Gallery.

It runs now through Black Friday, so you walk into the holidays with momentum instead of regret.

Doors close tonight at midnight. If you wait, you'll be starting the season the same way you started last year. Empty-handed and hoping something changes.

Don't miss it this year.

🧡The Sojourner Series seen together for the first time.

My latest series, Sojourners, finally seen together in one photo.

Four paintings. One story. Four different moments in the journey.

Each one explores ideas of faith, identity, migration, belonging, and home.

I’ve really enjoyed seeing these works come together as a mini body of work.

The first three will be in Kansas City this Friday, September 4, as part of Nuestra Tierra: Breaking Borders at the Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center.

If you’re in Kansas City, I hope you can come see them in person.

See my previous posts to learn more about each individual work.

More soon.

Introducing Sojourner: The Blooming, the third painting from my new Sojourner series. @sergiogomezpaintings

42 x 72 inches | Acrylic on paper adhered to canvas

The vibrant green rises through the painting, becoming lighter as it moves upward. The figure is surrounded by energy, color, and a luminous red outline. White paint flows through the figure like a current of light, almost like fire, but quieter. More like life itself moving through the body.

The halo is made of roses like the ones seen in Mexican folklore, a symbol that carries deep cultural resonance for me as a Mexican American artist. Here, the roses become a celebration of life, identity, beauty, and renewal.

After Bearer of Light and The Vulnerable One, this painting represents another part of the journey:

We can bloom...

Even after displacement.
Even after vulnerability.
Even while carrying the complexity of where we come from.

The Blooming is about flourishing without forgetting our roots. This is Nuestra Tierra

The Sojourners series is a new body of work exploring spirituality, migration, identity, cultural memory, and belonging.

This work will also be exhibited in:

Nuestra Tierra: Breaking Borders
A group exhibition featuring artists of Mexican descent in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

📍 Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center, Kansas City
@ mattierhodescenter
📅 Opening September 4

Save the date. I can’t wait for you to see these works in person.

If your art life feels a little heavy right now, if you’ve been doubting the work, questioning the point of the marketing, or feeling like you’re behind this summer, I want you to hear this:

You’re not the only one!

Even in a place full of sunshine like Florida, there are gloomy days. And in the studio, those days show up as tiredness, distractions, health stuff, family stuff, money stuff… the whole list. I've experienced my own share of these.

But gloomy studio days are not a sign that you’re failing.

They’re part of the process. There’s no win without the race.

So here’s a simple encouragement for this week:

Return to your “why.” Ask yourself (again): Why do I make? Why do I share? A strong “why” makes the tedious parts feel meaningful again.
Take one small, consistent step. Not a huge leap, just one honest step. One hour in the studio. One sketch. One email. One conversation. Consistency has a reward on the other side.
Stay connected. Art careers move forward through people connecting with people. Send one thoughtful message to someone you respect, thank them, encourage them, or simply say hello.

And if you need a sentence to borrow today, here it is:

I’m an artist on a mission.
Keep going. Better days will come—and your future self will thank you for staying in it.

When was the last time you had eight uninterrupted days to think about your art?

Not a weekend. Not an afternoon stolen between obligations.
Eight real days.

In March 2027 we’re leading a small group of serious artists on a creative residency at sea aboard the Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady.

This is not just a vacation with a few art classes mixed in.

It is focused, intentional time on the open ocean. Space to think clearly about your next body of work.

Conversations with other artists who are building real careers. A completely different environment that unlocks a completely different kind of thinking.

The artists who attend creative retreats always say the same thing afterward.

“I had no idea how much I needed that until I got back”

You do not have to wait until you feel like you deserve the time away. The best investment you can make in your creative career is giving yourself the space to think without interruption.

March 13 to 21, 2027. Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady.

Spots are limited. This is a small, intentional group.

Liminal Waters Series No. 1
24 x 30 inches • Acrylic on Canvas

Part of my new Liminal Waters series, this painting explores the space between uncertainty and hope. Emerging through the darkness, a beam of light breaks across turbulent waters—a reminder that guidance and grace often appear when we least expect them.

Inspired by the ocean’s power and the spiritual journeys that shape our lives, this work reflects on those moments when we are called to move forward, even when the path ahead is not fully visible.

Original painting available.

Also available as an 11 x 14 hand-signed print at www.sergiogomezonline.com/oceans
